Spencer’s cheeks darkened, and he stared intently at the ground. I cleared my throat, shuffling my feet. Shit, being threatened by Spencer’s dad had my dick hard. “Got it,” I grunted.

Ezra nodded and grabbed my hand in his, linking our fingers together. “Yes, sir.”

Jaxon turned and headed inside. Spencer’s cheeks were still colored red in embarrassment when he looked up at us. “I, uh, I’ll go inside now.”

I snickered. “Your dad is hot, pretty boy.”

Spencer rolled his eyes at me. “Be safe getting home. Both of you.”

“We will, baby,” Ezra assured him. “Go on inside.”

Spencer headed to the porch, and once he was inside with the door shut, Ezra tightened his hold around my hand and led me to his car. Once we were on the road again, he spoke up. “I don’t want you to go home, Logan. I don’t like that someone hurt you.”

I sighed. “I run my mouth a lot.” It wasn’t exactly a lie. Just with these fuckers, I didn’t even have to open my mouth most of the time. They just popped off over anything. “I’ll be fine.”

Ezra white-knuckled the steering wheel. “I don’t like it.”

I shrugged. “Can’t change me overnight, babe.”

Ezra cut me a dark look. “I don’t want to change you, Logan. But grown men shouldn’t be putting their hands on you either.”

I let a careless smirk tilt my lips. It was second nature to put up a front. I was a goddamn expert at it.

“Never said it was a grown man, baby.” It had been, but he didn’t need to know that. I reached over and rested my hand on his thigh. “Stop worrying so much. I’m fine. I promise. You know how much I run my mouth. That’s not going to change anytime soon.” Leaning over, I skimmed my lips over his cheek. His breath hitched in his throat. “Admit it—I look hotter like this.”

He snorted. “You’re hot all the time, Logan. I don’t need your pretty face all banged up to make you more attractive.”

I snorted. “You think I’m pretty?”

Ezra rolled his eyes. “I also think you’re a pain in my ass.”

I quietly laughed. “Glad that much hasn’t changed at least.”

He dropped one hand and laid it over mine on his thigh. Turning my hand over, I linked our fingers together. “The only thing that’s changed is that I want a future with you, Logan.” I swallowed thickly, lost for words. Because what in the hell was I supposed to say to that? “Promise me you won’t do something stupid to get that ripped away from me? From Spence?”

Well, that was an easy enough promise to make. I wouldn’t. He wasn’t asking me to make promises that I couldn’t keep—like staying out of trouble. That was sort of out of my hands.

“I promise,” I rasped.

He squeezed my hand. “Thank you.”

Fuck, that one promise wrecked me. Because yeah, I could uphold my promise easily enough. But he was worried I would end up getting myself hurt.

It wasn’t me causing the problems though.

That was what was wrecking me the most.

I couldn’t do what he really wanted me to do, which was keep myself safe. Okay. Healthy. Breathing.

Because when it came down to it, that was completely out of my hands. All I could do was try to get away before the hits got worse.

CHAPTER 17

Spencer

NEXT WEDNESDAY

I took a seat beside Shelby at the lunch table we’d kind of taken for ourselves. Lunch was a little gross-looking today, to be honest. The pizza was burned, the apple slices looked old, and everything else on the line looked inedible. I’d bypassed everything, grabbed a water, and decided to just pig out when I got home from school.
