The girl was about the same age as Dallas—beautiful, too. Her strawberry-blonde hair was long and thick, her eyes green, skin pale and lightly freckled. No tattoos or piercings, from what he could see—nothing that would make it super easy to recognize her if she came around. She would probably wind up being thrown into the infinite pile of missing young women who never found their way back home.

“I haven’t,” Max said.

“Perhaps your lady friend wouldn’t mind having a look.”

“Red,” Max called quietly. He turned, keeping his tattoo out of sight.

Dallas stepped up to his side. She hooked her hair behind an ear and checked the photo, her wings tucked away with a spell. “I’m sorry,” she said, shaking her head. “I’ve never seen her before.”

The officer slipped the photo into her jacket. “She went missing three days ago. Her family is worried sick about her. You’ll be sure to call the station if you see her.”

“Sure thing,” Max said.

She dipped her head in farewell. “Thank you for your time.”

Max watched her leave. She got in the passenger’s seat of the cop car, her partner heading to the driver’s side. As the man got in, he glanced up at Max, just for a second, before disappearing inside, the edge of his mouth curving with the hint of a smile. They were both hellsehers, though they moved with the kind of confidence he strictly saw on Darkslayers.

Lights oscillated through the parking lot as they drove out. But—

Max thumped out of the hotel room, loose bits of gravel digging into his bare feet. The pavement was still warm from the day’s heat.

The stop sign the car passed didn’t reflect any light except the beams from the headlights. Neither did the glass of the dark windows across the street.

“Max?” Dallas stepped over the threshold. “What’s going on?”

“The lights,” he whispered, wondering what it meant and if he’d lost his mind sometime during the drive here. “They weren’t reflecting.”

She took a step closer. “What?”

Max’s phone buzzed on the table inside the room. He stomped back inside, Dallas trailing behind him. He grabbed it and read the message from Malakai.

Malakai

That cunt cop come to your door too?

Max

Get out here.

Max waited by the door, leaning out of it to see if Delaney would listen for once in his life and get the hell out here. As he waited, he sent a message to Dom, asking him and Blue to come outside too.

Two minutes passed, and then they were all there. All except Aspen, who was in the shower.

Malakai walked over in bare feet, no shirt on, damp hair tied back in a low knot. Dominic and Blue came from a room on the opposite side of Max’s door and joined the group.

“What?” Malakai bit out, stopping a couple feet away.

“The cop. Describe her to me.”

“Reddish-blonde hair, green eyes, full cop getup. What’s going on?”

“What about the car?”

“What about it?”

“What did it look like?”

“Like a fucking cop car. Fuck’s sake, Reacher, are you on drugs?”
