“Darien!” Ivy called with an edge of panic.

“Don’t freak him out!” Loren hissed. But it was too late.

All conversation stopped. Boots rapidly struck the floor.

Darien appeared, his eyes immediately finding Loren. Behind him, Jack and Kylar filed in. They were already dressed and ready; Loren wondered where they’d gone.

“Loren?” Darien’s deep voice was tense.

Ivy snatched her wrist and held it up. “She needs to get to Silverway.”

Loren shifted from foot to foot as Darien jammed his finger into the button on the elevator for a fifth time—the one that would take them to Caliginous On Silverway.

She stood in the elevator with him, Ivy and Tanner here too. Other people were in the building as well, having to redirect their steps toward the other elevators upon seeing them standing inside. Their group wore hoods, Loren included, but she knew the three Darkslayers still stuck out horribly, even if no one could put a finger on who they were.

“It’s four o’clock,” Darien growled. “There’s no way they’re closed.”

A hellseher businessman walking by the elevators slowed, briefcase swinging in hand. “Are you trying to get to Caliginous?”

“Yes,” Darien said tightly.

“They’re closed.”

“Why?” The word was a bark that echoed.

The man shrugged. “They canceled my appointment and didn’t say why.” He walked away.

Darien looked up through the floors with black eyes. Cursed under his breath. Loren knew the spells, distance, and many floors were probably blinding him. He practically punched the button again, causing the backlight to flutter.

“Darien,” Ivy chided. “You’ll break it.”

Tanner added, “And then we won’t be able to come here tomorrow either, and you’ll be even more pissed.”

He stalked out of the elevator. Loren followed, Ivy and Tanner on either side of her.

Darien spun on a heel. “Atlas, come here for a sec.”

They stepped aside and spoke quietly for several minutes, leaving Loren alone with Ivy. Both of the guys stole glances at her every few seconds.

“What are they saying?” she asked Ivy.

“I’m sure they’ll tell us when they’re done gossiping.” Her tone was teasing, but her smile was stiff.

And then Darien and Tanner were heading this way.

“In the car,” Darien instructed.

They left the building and got in Darien’s car. The snap of Loren’s seatbelt buckling felt loud in the heavy quiet.

“Are you going to tell me what you’re thinking?” Loren asked, bundling her fingers into her jacket sleeves. She knew Ivy’s hellseher ears had picked up on what they’d discussed inside, but when Darien explained, he spoke as if his words benefitted everyone.

“We have a friend named Blue,” he began. “You’ve met her before. She’s powerful like you, but her magic is just blue. Back in Angelthene, our friend Dominic took her to the ocean to recharge her magic. Caliginous Chambers like Chamber Number Five recharge a person’s magic. When you woke up out of a coma, it was only after every color—every type of magic—was poured into you.” He must have noticed her shivering, because he started the car and turned the heat on. And then he held up his thumb and began ticking things off as he listed them. “You said you’re cold. I believe it’s because you need red magic—fire.” His index finger joined his thumb. “You said you’re always thirsty. Blue magic—water. What else? And don’t hold back because you’re afraid of causing alarm.”

“I feel like I can’t draw a deep enough breath.” She rubbed at her chest that felt too small.

He added his middle finger. “Oxygen. Green magic.” He dropped his hand and turned to look at Ivy and Tanner in the back seat. “Terra Firma.”

Ivy said, “Terra Firma, Mist, and Inferno.”
