“I think so.”

“If you get thirsty during the night, there’s juice and water in the fridge. I also have chocolate chip cookies. Help yourself to anything you want, okay?”

“Okay.” His voice was small.

“Goodnight, Paxton.” She padded across the room, reaching for the single lamp that was still lit—

“Shay?” Paxton called. She turned to see him sitting up on the couch, fresh alarm in his eyes. “Can you leave the light on, please?”

Shay nodded. “Sure. I’ll keep it on.” She dropped her hand, turning her head so Paxton couldn’t see the look on her face—the emotions that were threatening to tear through her careful restraints. “Goodnight, Pax.”

Blankets rustled as he laid back down. “Night, Shay.”

Fighting the sob building in her throat, she walked down the hall, heading for the single bathroom again to check on Roman.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket.

She took it out to see the name DARIEN CASSEL flashing across the screen. They’d exchanged numbers before she’d left Roman’s house—after she’d declared that she was going to the House of Black and no one was to follow her.

Darien hadn’t argued, which was probably a first. But everyone knew it was for the best. The leader of the Seven Devils wasn’t in any position to fight more battles tonight, and if he tried, there was a risk he wouldn’t win.

No one wanted to take that risk.

Shay read his message, then typed up a reply.

Darien

How’s he doing?

Shay

He’s okay.

Darien

And Pax?

Shay

Tired but good. I just tucked him in.

Darien

Good. Let me know if you need anything.

Shay

I will.

Shay put the device to sleep at the same time she heard the shower shut off.

She crept down the hallway, opting to wait right outside the door, giving Roman some much-needed space. She had left some loose clothes on the counter for him to change into—gray sweatpants and a baggy white shirt Paxton had grabbed from the House of Black. Easy enough to get on without her help, hopefully. But she listened quietly, in case he needed her. A few minutes passed before the door slowly opened, and he limped out.

Roman forced a crooked smile. “Pathetic, hey?” He took another step, limping again.

“Your dad? Yeah, he is pathetic.”

Roman smirked. “Where am I sleeping?”
