Talon left the engine running for warmth but shifted in his seat so that he was facing me. “Our relationship is no one else’s business.”

“Don’t you think they’ll have opinions about it?”

“My family’s been pushing me to talk to you, to resolve the issues between us.”

I wanted to ask if that was his only intention behind last night’s date, but I was too scared to hear his response.

Talon reached over, and took my hand between his, and said, “You’ve been a part of my family for a long time. Nothing that happened changed that. My mother loves you, and you’ve become a friend to Sarah, Ireland, and Marley.”

“They mean a lot to me.” I didn’t want whatever this was to interfere with those relationships.

“I promise that last night didn’t change anything.”

I swallowed over the sudden dryness in my throat, then opened the door. What if I wanted it to change everything?

Talon led the way through a space between two trees. Once we crossed the tree line, the rink was visible. Most of Talon’s family was already here. The little girls were skating on the ice, and Lori and a few others were sitting on camp chairs nearby.

Talon nodded toward his brothers who were standing in a group, having what appeared to be a tense conversation. “I think Sebastian’s move on Hanna last night will be the talk of the family.”

I let out a breath. “I hope you’re right.”

“Holly, come join us,” Marley called over to me.

Talon squeezed my hand, then let me go.

“Is everything okay?” Marley asked when I joined her and the other women.

“Of course.”

“You have a good time with Talon last night?” Ireland asked.

“We got some much-needed closure,” I admitted, even as my heart squeezed in protest. It felt like a whole hell of a lot more than that. But I wouldn’t admit that to Talon’s family.

“That’s good. I think you both have been needing that for a while,” Lori said with a smile.

I matched her grin. “I think you’re right.”

Heath approached. “Lucky for you, I bought a few skates when Sebastian said he was renting an ice rink. Why not take advantage of all this?”

I went through the skates Heath dropped in front of us and found ones that fit. I hadn’t skated in a while, but it came back to me quickly, especially with Addy and Ember shouting advice and encouragement.

Eventually, the guys joined us. The couples paired off, holding hands, and Talon skated over to me. “How are you doing?”

“Not bad. It’s been a while for me.”

Talon skated in front of me, turned, and proceeded backward. “The last time I went was with you.”

“Are you serious?” I asked him, my heart beating slow and thick in my chest.

He turned easily and fell into step next to me. “You’re the only woman I dated long-term. We did so many things and made a lot of good memories.”

There hadn’t been a lot for teenagers to do in town, but the outdoor ice rink had been new back then. We’d taken advantage of it. “That’s good to hear but also kind of sad.”

With my attention on him and not my feet, I stumbled.

Talon reached for me, tucking my hand in his. “Hold on to me if you need it. I’ve never wanted to go ice skating with anyone else.”

“Well, that’s—” the sweetest thing anyone’s ever said to me? What was I doing flirting with my ex? Nothing good could come from this trip down memory lane. “Do you still think this is a good idea?”
