Chapter 13

Holly

After my third orgasm, I lay awake listening to the rise and fall of Talon’s chest. His heart beat a steady rhythm under my cheek, and I marveled at the warmth of his body. His fingers rested in my hair even though they’d gone slack with sleep.

Had I ever stopped loving this man?

We were supposed to talk about our past and move forward from it. Spend time together and heal all the open wounds. Instead, we were right back where we started. I never should have believed that we could be together without falling back into a relationship.

I wasn’t sure what any of it meant. The one thing I knew for sure was that I liked it. I loved talking to Talon about our work. Sex was even better than it had been when we were teens.

The fear that we’d screw everything up was still there, but I decided to proceed with caution. Talon might not want anything serious. Maybe he wanted one time to get me out of his system or a confirmation that things were different.

He had never been that kind of guy. But maybe he’d changed over the years. By the time I finally fell asleep, my head ached.

I couldn’t help but think that nothing had changed. If we didn’t fix the problems of the past, where did that leave us?

I woke to the smell of bacon cooking and coffee brewing. The smell permeated the house and made it impossible to stay in bed. I stretched out, noting the coolness of the sheets.

Talon hadn’t stayed awake for hours last night, worried about what it meant. He’d slept like a baby. He wasn’t worried about anything. Was that because it didn’t mean anything to him?

Groaning, I climbed out of bed and jumped into the shower again. I washed quickly, wanting reassurance that last night was meaningful to him.

We were friends reuniting over our past relationship. We’d continue to try and work through the wounds of the past and move forward. I was too scared to hope for a future with him.

I twisted my wet hair into a bun and put on the same clothes I wore last night. I needed to go home and grab fresh ones.

As I went downstairs, my heart rate picked up. I was worried about how Talon would react. That he would shut this thing between us down, or that he’d ignore it, pretending everything was normal. I couldn’t pretend that last night didn’t happen.

It was etched on my heart. It was a memory I’d cherish forever, no matter what it meant to him.

I took a deep breath before I stepped into the kitchen. Talon stood at the counter in a black T-shirt stretched tight across his shoulders and the same sweats he’d worn last night to bring me dinner in bed.

“Morning, sunshine,” Talon said as he crossed the room and pulled me into his arms.

I felt stiff, not immediately melting into his embrace.

“Are you okay after last night?”

“I think so.”

He chuckled. “You don’t know?”

“I’m not sure what to think,” I said as he led me to the stool and waited for me to sit.

“I didn’t mean for things to progress that quickly, but I’m not sorry it happened.”

I let out the breath I’d been holding. “Okay.”

He raised a brow and crossed his arms over his chest. “Last night, you said you didn’t have any regrets.”

“That’s true.”

His brow furrowed. “But you do now?”

“I wouldn’t say that. I just don’t know what it means.”

He tipped his head to the side. “Why does it have to mean anything?”
