Page 59 of Endless Hope

“We’re kind of seeing each other. It started out as talking, spending time together, but then quickly morphed into something else.”

“I can’t say I’m surprised. You were inseparable back then. I always thought you’d move past the miscarriage and get back together.”

We might have, but I was so stubborn. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”

Mom’s face screwed up. “Why not?”

I leaned my elbows on the table. “Shouldn’t we move on from each other? I hurt him badly. I don’t want to do that again.”

Mom shook her head. “You’re older now. More mature. You’re not going to repeat the mistakes of your past.”

Hope soared at her words. “How can you be so sure?”

“With age comes wisdom.” Mom’s expression was filled with understanding, as if she’d made her own mistakes once upon a time.

“You make it sound so simple.”

Mom picked up her fork. “I’ve talked to Lori about it from time to time, and both of us thought you would have mended things long before now.”

“Maybe it’s too late for us.” My gaze drifted to the tablecloth.

Mom took a bite of her taco casserole. “It’s never too late to fix things.”

We fell silent while we savored the meal and thought about everything I’d said.

After a few minutes, Mom set her plate aside. “I always liked Talon. He was kind and respectful.” She smiled fondly. “He’d walk you to the door every night.”

I gave her a look. “We got pregnant.”

Mom laughed. “He was a teenager. Not a saint. I knew what was going on. That’s why we talked about birth control.”

We’d discussed how we’d gotten pregnant. How I’d only just gotten on the pill when we stopped using condoms. We weren’t responsible. “I let you down.”

Mom shook her head. “Not true. I’m so proud of you.”

I winced. “I’m not proud of how I handled things back then.”

“I think you need to forgive yourself before you can truly move on. If you want a relationship with Talon, you have to clear the deck.”

“That makes sense.” The thing was, did I want to? Did I want a life with Talon? “I’m not sure his family is happy about us. Emmett was upset when he saw us together.”

“Lori said Emmett is the toughest of her sons. That he’s hard to win over, but once you do, you’ll have his loyalty for life.”

I let out a breath, remembering the rigid expression on his face. “I haven’t earned his respect.”

“He’s probably worried about his brother, that he’s going to get hurt. He’ll see with time that you two were meant for each other.”

Is that why neither of us had been able to have another relationship that compared to ours? We were meant to be together?

Mom patted my hand. “I have faith that you’ll do the right thing.”

I let out a breath. “I’m glad someone does.”

“Are you happy when you’re with him?” Mom asked, and I thought about the last few times we spent time together.

“It feels good to be with him.” Being with Talon gave me the same high as when I was working on the kiln or creating something new. My creative juices were flowing, and I felt like I could do anything.

“Then give it some time. Emmett will see that you are serious about each other.”
