Page 89 of Endless Hope

“I like to think that everything works out in the end, even if the journey tests our patience.”

“You’ve helped Sebastian not be so uptight. I can’t thank you enough for that. He was a pain to deal with before,” I joked.

Hanna tipped her head back and laughed. “I know what you mean. He was scared to let go and just be. He was so worried about Brandy and how she’d react and what it would mean for Ember.”

“He’s a good dad.”

“He is. But you don’t have that same consideration. It’s just you and Holly. It should be easier for you two to figure things out.”

I shook my head, my gaze on the tree. “Our history is complicated.”

“I get that. But don’t let her get away. We love Holly.”

I nodded. “She’s a part of the family already.”

“You better not mess things up,” Hanna teased.

It wasn’t me who’d broken things off to begin with. It was Holly, and I had no control over how she handled our relationship. I could only hope she gave us a chance.

After we opened presents, I stayed to eat brunch. Then, one by one, they headed home to spend time alone.

I helped Hanna clean up and then said, “I want to stop by Knox and Sarah’s.”

“How are you going to top your present to Ember?”

“I was worried about that. I bought her baking lessons with Daphne. Knox said how much Addy loves to bake with Sarah. I thought she’d enjoy that.”

Sebastian frowned. “Emmett and Cole won’t like it.”

“You heard Mom. Daphne is already friends with the girls. Why wouldn’t we support her?”

Sebastian snorted. “You know that’s not how they’ll feel.”

“They don’t have to know.”

Hanna raised a brow and then laughed. “You sure enjoy pushing Emmett’s buttons.”

I exchanged a look with Sebastian. “It is fun.”

Hanna sobered. “But I think this thing with Daphne is different for Cole.”

“How so?” I asked as I dried the dishes with a towel.

“I think he likes her but feels like he can’t make a move. Not with her family and the business.”

Sebastian groaned. “That sounds complicated.”

Hanna placed the dishes in the dishwasher. “I don’t know for sure. That’s just my sense of what’s going on.”

“He was against Sarah using Daphne’s pies at her wedding,“ I said, not sure she was right about her assessment of the situation.

Hanna shook her head. “I don’t know why he said that. It doesn’t make sense.”

Sebastian pulled Hanna into his arms. “Whatever’s going on, it isn’t our business to interfere. We didn’t like when the family butted into our business.” He lowered his head as if to kiss her.

“And that’s my cue to leave.” I dropped the towel on the counter, grabbed my coat, and made for the door. Without looking back, I waved at them. “See you two later.”

“Merry Christmas,” Sebastian said as Hanna giggled.
