“I have a surprise for you.” I was excited to spend the day together.

Holly raised a brow. “What kind of surprise?”

I shifted the scrambled eggs from the pan to our plates. “I want to take you somewhere. But it’s a bit of a drive.”

“That sounds exciting.” A smile spread over her face.

“You don’t mind getting away for a bit?” I asked her.

“I love being on the farm, but I wouldn’t mind getting away.”

“We’ll be gone all day.” I rounded the counter and stood next to her.

She turned on her stool so that she faced me. “Are you going to tell me where we’re going?”

“Nope.” Every day with Holly was better than the last. I worried that something would happen, and Holly would bolt. But each day, I fell more in love with her and our future. I hoped I wasn’t being naïve. But this thing between us felt powerful enough to last.

I kissed her softy, then sat next to her, eating quickly so that we could get ready to go.

In the truck, I said, “Heath and Knox are covering the farm tonight.”

She turned slightly to face me. “You told them where you were taking me?”

“Yes, but they know it’s a surprise.”

Her brow furrowed. “Were they involved in the planning?”

I gave her a look. “I know what you’re trying to do, and it’s not going to work.”

When I’d hung out with my brothers on Mom’s deck after Christmas dinner, my brothers had said they were happy for me. They believed in our relationship. No one was telling me to be careful. So, I wasn’t sure why a part of me was still worried that something would happen to rock what we had.

Everyone was impressed with Mom’s speech. We’d worried about her over the years, but she seemed content with our ever-growing family. She’d always miss Dad, but he was still with us in spirit.

“I can’t imagine where you’d be taking me. We didn’t pack any clothes. So it’s not skiing.”

I gestured at the raindrops that were hitting the windshield. “Not exactly the best weather for skiing.”

I reached over and held her hand. “I just wanted a day for us. It doesn’t matter what we do as long as we’re not working.”

She bit her lip. “It is hard to separate from work when my workshop is so close.”

“It was the same in your apartment.”

Holly let out a breath. “I couldn’t escape it.”

“I was wondering if you’d like some space in the house for your work.”

“That’s not necessary. I should probably head back to my apartment soon. You don’t want me in your space all the time.”

“That’s exactly what I want.” I had no desire to spend nights apart.

“It’s too soon.”

“Is it? We have a history, and we’re adults now. There are no rules about how long you have to date before you move in together. It’s whatever we’re comfortable with, and I want you in my space.”

“I do like your bathtub,” Holly said cheekily.

“Is that all you like?” I couldn’t resist probing.
