“I’ll do that.” I could use assistance. It was impossible to attempt to fix it on my own. That’s why I’d left it the way it was for so long.

We paused on the path when the lake came into view. “It’s beautiful.”

The lights were in the shape of ornaments. We moved closer so I could get a better look.

There was a structure underneath the water that held the lights. I’d suspected as much, but I wasn’t sure I could create something so big on my own.

“Aren’t your brothers handy? Surely they could help you with this.”

We walked slowly around the lake. “Now that I see it, I’m on the right track. But you’re right, I might need more manpower.”

“You can rely on your family. It doesn’t make you weak.”

“I don’t think that. I just wanted to prove that I was okay on my own. Even though I live on the farm, near my mother and brothers, I’m independent. But honestly? I don’t think I was doing that great. Sure, my work got done, but I wasn’t eating or sleeping right. Now that you’re around, it’s easy to see how it was hurting me.”

“I’m glad you see that now.”

“I’m going to make some changes this year. Less work, more time to make sure I’m eating and taking care of myself.”

Holly moved close, patting my stomach. “You still work out.”

“I swear that helps with my creativity. Whenever I’m stuck, I’ll exercise, and it clears my brain.”

She wrapped a hand around my arm, leaning in close. “Maybe I should try that.”

I patted her hand. “We could go on walks like this.”

“I wish I could figure out how to make the birds.”

“You’ll get it. Just keep working at it.”

Holly nodded. “Just like you’ll get the lights in the pond to look like this.”

“It won’t be nearly as big, but I hope so. It will be a nice place for us to visit in the evening.”

“You’ve made a nice home for yourself on the farm.”

My heart picked up the pace. Emmett had dated someone who didn’t want to live on a farm. It wasn’t for everyone. “Can you see yourself living there?”

She was thoughtful for a few seconds. “I can.”

“You think you can live on a Christmas tree farm close to my brothers and my mother?” Who would hopefully be her in-laws one day.

“If we get tired of it, we could go on vacation.”

I liked the idea of traveling with Holly. “I think that’s going to be a necessity. You haven’t been to many places, have you?”

“I’ve been busy working and trying to make a go of my business.”

“We’ll have to change that.”

“I’m on board with that.”

I would do whatever I could to make Holly’s dreams come true, whether that was her business, traveling, or our ability to have kids. There were many options for us if we couldn’t get pregnant naturally. I wasn’t going to give up. But I wasn’t sure if Holly wanted the same things.

We slowly walked the perimeter of the lake so I could analyze every angle of the lights shining through the water. When I was satisfied I understood how they’d done it, we headed back up the hill through the trees.

“This place is serene and so beautiful.” Holly paused on the path, turning to face the lake. Holding her hands up as if she were framing the lake, she said, “I’d love to paint this—the lake and the trees surrounding it.”
