My mouth drops open but quickly closes again. I don’t have the energy to deal with this rude obnoxious bitch. It’s not even ten o’clock yet, and I’ve been stared at like I have a disease, degraded, and insulted. Now I have to spend God knows how long with this woman who probably has never had a single struggle in her life. This is going to be a long exhausting day.

Chapter Ten

Roman

THERE’S A STARK CONTRAST between the Indie that left my office this morning to the one entering now.

The tight skirt outlines the small curve of her ass, and I can’t help but imagine my handprint branded across it.

Indie isn’t a naughty girl, though. Which is such a shame. No, Indie is a rule sticker. A good girl, a do-gooder. Someone with integrity and way too much honor.

Once again, without knocking, she waltzes over to my desk and places my credit card down in front of me, without a single word.

“Well now, don’t you look lovely?” June complements her, looking up from her notebook.

Lovely doesn’t even begin to describe how Indie looks. The gold belt around the waist of her black dress accentuates how petite she is, while the black shiny pumps, give her more height and sophistication. I’m certain she turned heads on her way back to the office, and not in a way she’s used to.

“It’s definitely an improvement,” I exclaim as I look her over. Even though Indie holds her head up proudly, her eyes look down shamefully. This beautiful contradictory woman makes my cock stir in my pants uncomfortably, yet at the same time, she irritates me. The way she carries herself like she’s so unworthy aggravates me. Does she not realize how insanely beautiful she is?

“We’re finished here,” I advise June. “Can you get that letter drawn up and sent over to Mr. Jackson ASAP?”

June looks at me confused, then at her notepad. I can see the exact moment in her eyes it all registers. “Yes, Sir. I will get right to it.” June gets up from her seat and leaves my office, and Indie starts to follow her.

“Miss Johnson,” I call out to her. “You can stay.”

I watch Indie’s face drop a little at my request before she walks back over to my desk.

“Take a seat,” I instruct and wait for her to do so.

“I want to give you a little background on the firm. My father owns and manages the company. I head our criminal law department, and my brother Liam manages the corporate department. Our other associates handle property, litigation, family law, and taxes. I represent some very prestigious and...” I pause for a moment, contemplating my words. “Dangerous people. Most of the cases I work on are sensitive and private matters, so what you read, hear, or speak about in my firm is strictly to stay here. Am I clear?”

“Yes, Mr. Judge,” Indie answers without hesitation.

“Please don’t call me that. That’s my father’s name. You may address me as Roman, or in the presence of clients, Sir.”

Indie nods, starting to look more and more nervous with every word I say.

“This is a non-disclosure contract, as well as an employee form.” I push the contract across my desk. “I want you to read through it and have it signed and back to me by the end of the day.”

She nods again, picking up the contract. “Is that all?” Indie starts to stand but sits back down as I shake my head no.

“I wanted to ask you about your brother, Austin.” The moment I say his name, Indie’s eyes look down. She is ashamed, which I understand. But her brother fucked up, not her, and now she’s the one paying for it.

Sitting upright in her chair, she nervously smooths out the fabric on her thighs. “What about him?”

“How is he?”

“He’s alright, considering,” she replies, but I can tell nothing about her brother is ‘alright’.

“Does he have a tendency to get himself in trouble?” I ask her. “Were you aware of his dealings with Mr. Moretti and the club?”

“No, I knew something was off with him lately. He’s been coming home late, but I never imagined him getting himself involved with someone like that.”

“Where are your parents?”

“Not around.”

“Why?”
