“I brought my phone in and he examined it and told me in about one minute that it was tapped.”

“No! No! Are you okay? Your voice sounds a little shaky.”

“Oh I’m definitely shaking. And I’m no way okay. I asked Earnhart to examine my house too.”

“Is he doing it now?”

“No…I wish. He penciled me in for this fall. I told him I’m not even able to stay at my own home anymore but he said November’s the earliest he can deal with it.”

“That’s insane! So what should Levi say about the phone tapping tonight?”

“Nothing. Quade can’t know that I know this. Levi’s going to have to play it cool. Maybe you shouldn’t even tell him.”

“No, I think Levi should know what he’s dealing with. You know, so he’ll keep his phone close at hand. I don’t know how easy it is to tap, but what if he does it to all of us? Or already has?” Holly asks with escalating panic.

“Don’t think like that Holly. I’ve received no indication that he’s heard any of our conversations or any calls I’ve made from your phone.” It dawns on me how lucky I am that I essentially blew Bo off a few nights ago. What if Holly’s right?

“Want to hop in the tub?” Holly asks after dinner, when two more hours have passed and Levi still isn’t home.

“No…you go ahead without me. I’ve gotta stay focused.”

“You sure? You’ve been working nonstop ever since Florida.”

“Yeah Holly, thanks. Really…I’ve got a pile of messages to respond to. Busy week of a busy season.”

“Okay, well, I think I’ll pop some corn and find something to watch…in case you’d like to join me later. Nothing like a good show to take your mind off…oh good, it’s him!” Holly abruptly cuts herself off to race downstairs and meet Levi as he comes in the door.

A minute later they’re with me in the guest office, Levi looking stricken.

“What did the man say?” I ask with a faltering voice that I pretend isn’t faltering.

Levi’s eyes are bloodshot, like he hasn’t slept in days. I know the feeling, but I have to laugh that just a couple hours with Quade can do this to a person. He doesn’t even bother walking over to the couch, but sinks onto the carpet…right next to my desk chair.

“He went to Victor.”

“What?!” I scoot my chair back and stand so fast it falls backward. “What the hell did that freak say to my father?”

Levi drops his head like he can’t bare to face me with this information.

“What?!”

“Your father…you know, your father’s mind is very fragile at this point.”

“Yes Levi, I know my father’s mind is very fragile…”

“Quade told me you never legally divorced.”

My face goes red as a beet. In my periphery I can see Holly slowly sinking to the couch.

“Is that true Fiona? I mean…I’m not trying to grill you or anything, but—”

“Yes it is true. I am so screwed.” A long moment of silent dread fills the space between us. “So what does this have to do with my father?”

Levi heaves out another deep sigh and continues. “Quade has convinced your father that you never divorced spiritually either, and that you’re now messing around with other men. Which he even had the nerve to try to convince me was essentially the case. When I didn’t look like I believed it… he told me…”

“What did he tell you Levi?!”
