I squeal with laughter, holding onto the contents of the container while he spins me around, and I toss a few pieces of chicken at his bare chest.

He lets go, looking down at the sauce and noodles that stick to his skin.

“You’re gonna pay for that.” He grabs onto my ass, lifting me up and turning me around.

He crashes his hungry mouth to mine. I stop struggling against him and lean into his kiss, feeling his hands knead both my cheeks. “Jesus, this ass, it’s fucking perfect,” he groans, palming me.

“Does that mean I’m forgiven?” I smile against his lips and wrap my legs around his waist.

He pulls his mouth from mine. “You play dirty,” he groans, looking down at the sticky sauce that clings to both my breasts, and he licks his lips. “I like it.” A pulse runs down my stomach and right to my pussy at just the thought of him licking the sauce from my body.

Setting me down on my feet, his eyes drop to my breasts. “What are you going to do about it?” I ask, looking up at him through my lashes.

He swallows hard and then he grabs me by the waist, holding me tight to him. I blow out a breath, anticipating his mouth on me.

His hands move up my body and my breath hitches, but instead of taking me into his mouth, he starts to tickle me.

I laugh, shocked and embarrassed that he tricked me. “You’re an asshole!” I yell between fits of laughter as I struggle against him.

“So I’ve heard,” he bites out, laughing so hard he can barely hold onto me anymore.

I take the opportunity to squirm out of his hold.

I run back down the hall towards the kitchen, leaving the partially empty carton on the floor. When I get to the end of the hall and turn to enter the kitchen, a woman is standing by the island. Darren crashes into me.

“Lottie!” he yells, and casually walks over, giving her a hug and lifting her feet slightly off the ground.

“Darren!” she scolds him loudly. “You put me down!” She smacks his arm and Darren sets her feet back on the ground. She smiles at him while touching his face in a motherly kind of way.

“Darren,” she says his name again softly, and the moment becomes heavy, the laughter squeezed out of the room. “I’m so sorry.” Her eyes look as though tears will spill over any minute. Darren smiles at her in a way I’ve never seen him smile at anyone. Not even the laugh I elicited from him earlier rivals this smile. A pebble of jealousy starts to grow in my belly but I quickly push it down when Darren turns proudly, his arm around the woman. “Lottie, this is my wife, Evangeline.”

I quickly cross my arms over my chest, embarrassed.

“Your wife?” Lottie asks, shocked.

“Yeah, it kinda happened fast,” Darren says, rubbing the back of his neck and raising his eyebrows at me. “I’m so glad you’re back.” He gives her another hug.

“I’m gonna go and get dressed,” I say, hooking my thumb in the direction of the stairs.

“It was nice meeting you,” Lottie says politely.

I nod and exit the kitchen. As I leave, I hear Lottie say, “She’s beautiful, Darren.”

He replies, “Yeah, she is.”

“Tell me everything,” I hear Lottie say, but I don’t hear his response. I wonder exactly what he will tell her. Maybe he should explain that he fucked me out of my contract at the agency and coerced me into marrying him so he could get his family’s money.

“Evangeline?”

I turn around, looking over Darren’s shoulder to see that he’s alone.

“I’m sorry about that.” He tips his head in the direction of the kitchen. “I forgot she was coming by today.” He shakes his head in apology.

“It’s fine,” I say, pushing a few stray pieces of hair from my face. “This is your house.”

He pinches his eyebrows at my choice of words. His arm rests on the post of the stairs while I stand on the first step, making us equal in height.

“I know,” he says, gripping the post. “I, uh,” he pauses, shaking his head as if to unstick the words in his throat. “Just wanted to make sure you were okay.”
