“You can leave them with me,” Myrna said, winking. “I’ll make sure they have a nice time relaxing while you enjoy the fair.”

“Thank you,” Olivia told her.

Stark gave the woman a nod when she smiled at him, then focused on hopping out of the sleigh and holding his arms out for Olivia.

“I can get out on my own,” she told him.

He frowned at her and she laughed. But she also allowed him to lift her down. He slid her down slowly, holding her close, so that she caught her breath and her eyes went to his mouth.

Then he chuckled.

“Are you laughing at me?” she breathed.

“Only a little,” he murmured, leaning in so that his lips brushed hers as he spoke.

He felt her melt in his arms and the urge to take her again made him feel like a feral animal. He didn’t care about snowball fights or sweet little old ladies. He only wanted to lick her until she screamed and then drive himself into her, owning every inch of her from her sweet smile to the tips of that silly pink hair.

“Stark?” she murmured, her lips sliding along his. “Shouldn’t we do our activity?”

He growled, but let her back away.

Tonight,he reminded himself as his heart thundered and his body demanded he pull her close again.

“Oh, look,” she breathed, pointing.

Just down the hill, mounds of snow and stands of pine trees provided cover for an epic snowball battle. Each team was on one side of the path that clearly led to the town.

The participants were laughing and yelling, but they were also clearly serious about the contest. Each time someone ventured forward, they were immediately pelted by the other side.

“They’re going about it all wrong,” Stark couldn’t help saying.

“What do you mean?” Olivia asked.

“They’re hiding behind those walls,” he pointed out. “The game will never end.”

“That’s just so they don’t get hit,” she said.

“It’s only snow,” he said. “You can’t be afraid of it.”

As they approached, each team yelled out for them to join.

One team had more members than the other.

“We should join the smaller team,” Olivia said immediately.

“Agreed,” he told her, feeling proud that his soft little Terran had a sense of honor.

The team cheered as they approached. He could see that most of the participants were Maltaffian or Terran, which had likely been arranged to make the two of them feel comfortable. Who knew if any of them were even real?

But Olivia was laughing delightedly as they introduced her around and showed her the cache of snowballs they had piled up on a big red sled behind the snowy embankment they had created.

“Welcome,” a golden-skinned Maltaffian said to Stark, offering his arm. “I’m Ardyss.”

“Stark,” Stark replied, taking it and shaking twice. He was surprised to find that the man appeared to be real flesh and bone. “Looks like quite a game.”

“We’ve been at it all day,” Ardyss admitted. “We can’t seem to make any progress. But I hear you were on the real battlefield back in the day.”

“It’s not the same,” Stark said.
