Page 23 of Finding Ava

If so, didn’t that speak of a deeper connection than she’d thought him capable of? Or did it just simply mean he needed the information everyone felt she had hidden in her brain? He’d said he was coming for her heart, mind and soul and Ava knew the truth. He already had her body.

If Cap pushed things on a physical level she had no way to protect herself from him. Her body ached for his…had for the entire time she’d been gone. Even with her mind throwing up roadblocks, her body still acceded to his. He’d always made her feel things. At first, she’d had a hard time accepting his dominion over her body but eventually her heart had told her she could trust him with that.

Her heart was a liar.

But she wasn’t. She could readily admit she craved Captain Jacobs. But she wouldn’t give in to him and grant him her heart again. That wasn’t happening this go ‘round.

Ava watched the night go by the jet’s window and was relieved when the Buckle Seat Belt sign came on. Of course, she’d never unbuckled hers. They landed soon after that, and Cap woke up, looked her over, and offered her his hand.

She declined it and heard his heavy sigh.

She hustled off the plane to another blacked-out SUV. This time Cap sat in back with her and Scope drove while Holland sat in the very back and Kyle once again sat in the front.

“There she is,” Scope enthused looking in the rearview mirror. “I missed you! You took off like a bat out of hell and hid like a pro, didn’t you?”

She nodded and smiled at him. “I missed you too, Scope.”

“Well now that you’re back, we’ll need to pick back up with the chess. I’ve improved since you’ve been gone. I’m a regular aficionado.”

“I look forward to the contest.”

“Damn straight,” Scope said and went back to driving.

No one said anything else for the rest of the drive.

“Stay here,” Cap commanded as he got out of the car.

Kyle and Holland got out as well, leaving her and Scope inside.

“He’s missed you,” Scope said softly.

“Now, now, Scope, we know that’s not true.”

Scope threw her an indecipherable look. “I wouldn’t say it if it wasn’t true.”

Ava said nothing. Cap opened the door and gestured her out of the SUV. He hauled her up against his side and then they were walking inside the building. They took an elevator to the fifth floor which opened into a lovely penthouse apartment. The apartment was dominated by the view—large windows across the back wall showed the Chicago skyline in glorious detail.

“Wow,” she whispered.

“You like it?” Cap asked.

“It’s gorgeous,” she replied. “Whose is it?”

“Mine,” he said and gave her no more than that.

The elevator opened again and spit out Holland, carrying her backpack.

“Put it in the main,” Cap told him.

“Isn’t the main yours?” she asked Cap.

“It is yours for the foreseeable future.”

Ava walked to the windows and stared out at the night. She didn’t know how long she stood there but saw Cap’s reflection in the window behind her. He wasn’t close enough for her to feel his heat and she suddenly found that’s what she wanted.

Gah! She was so confused. She’d spent the last two years hating the man, trying to kill all the love she’d ever felt for him in her heart.

Only to find out that apparently that wasn’t possible because the stupid organ only beat hard when he was near.
