Page 27 of Finding Ava

She headed to the bedroom and closed the door. No reason to lock it. He’d already proven he could get in and out at will. She walked over to his dresser and found a drawer with t-shirts. Pulling one out, she took off her own tee and bra and pulled his over her head. She didn’t question her actions.

It was just a t-shirt, for Christ’s sake.

CHAPTER SEVEN

He’d told himself that once he found her, he’d never sleep away from her again. He was, if nothing else, a man of his word, contrary to what Ava thought. The thought speared him right in the heart and he hissed in a breath.

Still, he was going to sleep with her by his side tonight and every other night for the rest of their lives. It was both promise and vow.

He’d checked the security cams and locked down the building. Short of a bomb going off, nothing was getting in or out. New information from Tex led Cap to believe they had about forty-eight hours before the Chinese or Russians came calling and he was planning on being long gone by then. Holland had first watch tonight. Cap was on last.

He walked into his bedroom and noticed she’d left the bathroom light on. He didn’t turn it off. Waking to darkness wasn’t her favorite thing. He brushed his teeth and noticed her meager supplies on the sink beside his.

He rubbed his chest. She’d run from him for two years. They’d been the hardest two years of his life, not knowing if she was alive or dead. He took his shirt off but left his jeans on as he stepped up to the bed.

She’d migrated to the middle of the large bed and he lifted the covers.

His breath stopped. She was wearing one of his t-shirts and panties. Yeah, he needed to leave his pants on—temptation was too close.

Cap slid in his bed, spooning her as he lowered the covers. As she always did, she settled into his body, wriggling her luscious ass until she was comfortable. Her body knew what her mind refused to acknowledge.

They belonged to each other.

With a raging hard-on, Cap settled in for a little sleep. It took him a few minutes to breathe through his lust but there was nothing he would do about it tonight. He refused to wake her up. The next few days were going to be rough and she needed all the rest she could get.

Cap woke in a rush, adrenaline pumping through his system. He carefully disengaged from Ava and got out of the bed. He made his way to the bank of monitors near the kitchen entrances and looked at each monitor closely. Nothing moved on the screens but something told Cap things weren’t right.

He put his earphone in his left ear and pulled his SAT phone from his back pocket where he’d left it last night.

“Yeah, something doesn’t feel right,” Holland said into the earpiece. “We need to get ghost.”

“Get Kyle and Scope ready to move. I’ll meet you downstairs in ten minutes.”

He made his way back to the bedroom. He’d thought they’d have more time.

He’d been wrong.

He turned on the overhead lights in the bedroom, and she burrowed deeper in the covers and the indentation made by his body. He knew he’d have to reach for her, and without her earbuds in, she’d wake up scared.

He didn’t have a choice and as he reached over to shake her shoulder she turned over, fear in her eyes. It scored him, that fear.

He reached for her earbuds and handed them to her motioning her to hurry up and put them in. She did.

When she’d gotten the volume settled he told her they needed to move.

She understood what that meant. She got up, put on joggers, a sweatshirt, and her tennis shoes and stood there waiting on him. She didn’t ask him a single question.

He was so fucking proud of her.

“This could be nothing,” he told her hurriedly. “But better safe than sorry. Grab what you want to take and let’s go.”

He dressed while she gathered up her meager items and he noticed she put his t-shirt in her backpack. He almost smiled at that.

He strapped his weapons holster over his shoulders and made his way back into the living room before hitting a button on the wall. It revealed a small weapons room. He gathered up three Glock 19s and then reached for a bag. In the bag went his Barrett .50 caliber rifle, broken down but ready to go.

He knew that Holland, Scope and Kyle would be prepared with their own weapons. So he grabbed ammunition and threw it in his bag. Hauling that over his shoulder he closed and locked the door.

He put two of the of the Glocks in his shoulder holster and the third at his back. He turned and saw Ava standing there watching him. She had her backpack on, and she looked ready for flight.
