“Want to do a perimeter check with me?”

“Sure, I’ll take the back fifteen and you take the front?” Holland asked.

He hadn’t been exaggerating when he told Ava he owned six thousand acres. That equated to around thirty miles of perimeter to be covered.

“Yeah, sounds about right,” Cap agreed.

“Who is going to watch the monitors?”

“I got it,” Scope said coming into the room.

“Jesus, Scope, you need rest,” Cap told him.

Scope snorted. “We’ve been waiting for this for two years. We haven’t been on a mission in two months. I’m all rested up, Cap. I got this.”

“I guess a complete check will let us know what needs to be shored up,” Cap told Holland.

“Shit, with you taking fifteen and me taking fifteen it’ll take us a couple of days to do a check,” Holland stated.

“Then we better get started,” Cap said firmly.

Cap had outfitted the perimeter in the spring of last year after he bought the property and the cabin that sat on it. The mountain passes were a natural barrier, and the forest was another. But Cap had put down tripwires that set off flares and cameras all along the perimeter. He’d not put down mines as there were hunters who occasionally trespassed.

If anyone tried to come on his property he’d know about it.

He and Holland threw on sheepskin coats, hats, and gloves and set out to do the perimeter check.

Cap made good time, finishing the first half of his fifteen miles in about four hours. He was finally tired enough to get some sleep. He’d checked in with Scope at each camera and they were fully functional. He ran into some tripwires that needed to be replaced. The forest had taken them over. He’d take care of it within the next few days.

He met Holland at the front door of the cabin as the sun was making its presence felt in the sky.

“Beautiful sunrise,” Holland said.

Cap nodded as he took off coat, hat and gloves. “I’m heading up.”

Holland nodded right back at him but didn’t stop looking at the sunrise. “I miss her.”

Cap clapped him on the shoulder and stood with Holland until his fit of sorrow was over, and he too took off his coat, hat and gloves. Cap was the lucky one and Holland never let him forget it.

Cap headed up the stairs and carefully entered the room. Ava was a lump under the covers in the middle of the bed. The fire had long since died but the room was still toasty warm. He removed his boots, pants and shirt, leaving himself in his boxer briefs. Then he climbed into the bed and moved Ava until her back was fitted to his front.

She didn’t wake up. Cap lay there for probably an hour just holding her and watching the sunrise outside his window. He breathed her in and her scent settled him. He’d meant what he’d said to Marshall earlier. This was all for her. Every step he’d taken in the last two years had been for her—even when he’d not known if she was alive or dead.

Then, with her scent in his nose, and her body wrapped in his, Cap gave over to sleep.

CHAPTER TEN

Ava woke up nice and warm and with the smell of Cap in her nose. She took stock of her surroundings and remembered that she was now in Idaho, in a glorious cabin in the wilderness.

With Cap.

Last night came back to her in a rush and she rubbed her backside against his front. His hand immediately came up in front of her face, palm outward, their sign for is everything okay.

She grabbed his hands and pulled them to her chest, holding on tight, still unable to believe they’d made love last night.

Mind, heart, body, soul.

He had three of the four locked down. It was her mind that refused to give in as easily as her body had. Her heart had never stopped belonging to him, even when she hated him for thinking about giving her over to his superiors. And her soul? Well she was pretty sure he owned that as well.
