“I got back from watch and heard you shooting in the upper pass. Sounds like you got some good practice in,” he said to her.

“Marshall is the man. He taught me how to hold and shoot the Glock, then we went through the .50 caliber rifle of yours, which, by the way I’ve commandeered.”

“She’s got a good eye, Cap. That rifle of yours works well in her hands,” Marshall reported.

Cap nodded at them and then reached for Ava. He unzipped her coat and took it off. Then he grabbed her by the waist and hauled her into his body, and before she could blink, he was kissing her.

He stopped long enough to whisper in her ear. “I know something else that works well in your hands.”

He’d known it would make her laugh. She pushed away from him, giggling like a loon but unable to contain it.

The door opened and closed and then, “Oh, man, get a room,” Scope said with a laugh of his own.

“We’ve got one, but we keep being interrupted,” Cap said, staring down at Ava.

And it hit Ava then…Olivia might be alive! The time with Marshall had wiped her mind of any troubles. She’d focused on learning the weapons and shooting them.

And that too, she figured, was probably Cap’s intention.

“Any news?” she asked him.

He shook his head. “I’ve got a meeting with Wolf in about an hour. Want to sit in?”

“Please.”

“Go shower, be down in an hour, and we’ll take the meet,” Cap told her.

He was really trying to include her, and she was grateful.

She squeezed his hands before letting them go and heading up the stairs to her room. And if she put a little something extra in her walk up the staircase, well Cap was watching, so she swung her hips a little harder, relishing the hiss he released.

When she reached the top, she turned and looked down at him. He was watching every move she made. Not knowing what to say, she inclined her head at him and walked away.

They had a reckoning coming.

CHAPTER TWELVE

Cap sat at the head of the table and looked up at the big screen on the far wall. “Thanks for this, Wolf,” he said to the man on the screen.

“Not necessary. Your woman is in trouble,” Matthew ‘Wolf” Steel responded. “Abe, Cookie, and Dude are coming with me. Mozart and Benny can’t make it.”

“Any help is appreciated. I’ll send the Cessna to Boise to pick you up at the airport there. You should be here around midday.”

“Ava, it’s nice to meet you and I guess we’ll see you guys tomorrow,” Wolf said.

“Tomorrow,” Cap intoned, and Wolf disappeared from the screen. He turned to Kyle then. “What do we know?”

“Not a lot,” she began. “Tex and I have both been monitoring the chatter and we’ve come up with nothing. We know they’re coming, though. Tex let just enough go about Ava being with you, and they’re hunting you now.”

“You’re monitoring the dark web too?” he asked her.

“Yes.”

“Good, stay on it,” he told Kyle.

“Scope, how long do we have?” Cap asked him.

“A few days. Four, five?” Scope shook his head. “They found Chicago pretty damn fast so I’m going to err on the side of caution and give you four days.”
