“Yeah. Heading home now. Just stopped to pick up some flowers for Scottie.”

Jarrod chuckled. “Damn, you two made me envious last night. He’s a wonderful guy, Griff.”

He didn’t even know the half of it. “Yeah, I’m a lucky man.”

“Tough about your kid, though. Has he still not come around yet?”

“No. He avoided us when we went to pick up the rest of Scottie’s stuff.”

“Do you want me to take a shot at talking to him? You did it for my daughter. I would do it for you in a heartbeat if it helped.”

“Thanks, man, but when Jay says to leave him alone, he means it. The best we can do right now is to give him space.”

“All right. Give him time, then, and we’ll see. If my daughter can come around, your son can too.”

I’d thought so too that even if he didn’t miss me, after a few days, he would realize the friendship he had with Scottie wasn’t worth throwing away. Every day that passed, my hope dwindled, though, and not just mine. Scottie was happy living with me, but sometimes he would laugh, then stop suddenly as if he didn’t think he deserved to be happy.

How could I fix things for him without making it worse?

I confirmed the time I would meet Jarrod for the Cavs basketball game, then hung up and drove home. As the city lights blurred past me, my thoughts wandered back to Scottie. If Jay was too stubborn to forgive him, I would have to ensure Scottie never regretted us.

I parked in the parking lot of our building and took a deep breath. Sometimes I still felt in a daze over living in a place like this. I had a decent job, a nice apartment, and a gorgeous man who slept next to me at night. If only Jay would come around.

When I walked in, Scottie was ironing his clothes for the work week. He was so engrossed in the trivia game show on the TV that he hadn’t heard me enter the apartment. He must have taken a shower not too long ago. He was wearing one of my T-shirts, which reached him mid thigh. Was he wearing shorts underneath? He pumped his fist at getting an answer correct, and the shirt rode up his ass, showing one delectable cheek cupped by red lace.

Fuck.

I stood frozen in my tracks, the bouquet and chocolates almost slipping from my grip. I must have made a sound because he snapped his head around and smiled. A genuine smile that welcomed me home every single day.

“You’re home.” He grabbed the remote and muted the volume on the TV.

“Yeah.”

“What’s wrong? You’re just standing there, staring.”

“At you.”

“M-m-me?” His face turned red. I would never tire of the way he acted shy. Classic Scottie. Yet the moment I touched him, he was ready to spread his legs for me, and I loved that about him.

“Raise your shirt,” I said hoarsely.

“Why?”

“I want to see your sexy little ass.”

Scottie bit his bottom lip and turned around, slowly lifting the hem of my oversized tee to reveal his sweet ass. Perfect snow-kissed twin globes that teased me through the lacy underwear. Swallowing thickly, I approached but didn’t touch him. I placed the flowers and chocolate on the coffee table. “Don’t move.”

I disappeared into our bedroom and returned without my shirt and shoes and with my jeans unzipped. Scottie hadn’t moved an inch. The color of his eyes had darkened, and his chest rose and fell as he watched me.

“Come here.” I wrapped my arms around Scottie and pulled him flush against my front. He smelled sweet, like the blossoms of a tree in spring. Nothing like me.

“Why are you stopping?” He clutched my shoulders.

“I should probably take a shower first. I’ve been in the sun all day. You can smell me, don’t you?”

“Hmm.” Scott sniffed my pits and moaned. “Smells like a man to me.” He ran his hand down my chest and to my groin, where he cupped me in his hands.

“You don’t mind?”
