“I’m not sure I’m doing the right thing hiding what happened from Griff.”

“You shouldn’t keep it from him.”

“But you know what your father is like, Jay. You got mad about what David did, and we’re not even sleeping together. Now put yourself in Griff’s shoes. He’ll get himself into trouble, and I can’t allow that to happen. I just can’t.”

Maybe if the incident had happened before we had our rooftop date and he filled me in on his time in prison. He’d tried to make his stories seem light, but I could tell being locked up had done a number on him. The way he’d cherished my letters said a lot. How could I sentence him back to that place? And that was exactly what would happen if he got into a fight with David over me.

“You’re right. I can’t see Dad letting this slide, but what are you going to do? Keep it from him forever?”

“Maybe just for the time being until the final restraining order comes through. Then I can convince him the law handled it so there’s no reason to face David.”

“Maybe, but you didn’t really let the law handle it, Scott. The cop told you you could press charges if you wanted, but you hadn’t decided.”

“I’ll think about it.” I’d said those same words to the detective when I’d reported the incident before filing the restraining order at the courthouse.

“Was that all? What’s really going on in your mind?”

“Griff saw the bruises. He thinks I’m cheating on him.”

“Whoa. What did you say?”

“That I got them from playing too rough with you.”

Jay groaned. “Now it’s my face he’ll want to smash.”

“He wouldn’t do that to you, so I know you were safe to use. Please don’t be mad.”

“You know I can’t be mad at you for shit anyway. We’ve been friends too long, but don’t keep this secret and ruin your relationship.” He swiped a hand down his face. “I can’t believe I’m encouraging you not to stop boinking with my dad.”

“You’re a good friend, Jay. He says he believes me, but if it gets out of hand, I’ll tell him the truth.” Only if there was no other way.

“So why are you calling me at midnight instead of being in bed?”

“I’m waiting for Griff to come home.”

“Jeez, he’s out that late?”

“Yeah, but he’s with someone we both trust.”

“I hope so. You’ve got a lot of confidence in him, Scott. I hope he doesn’t let you down.”

“He won’t.” My phone vibrated. Jarrod? Why was he calling me instead of Griff? “Jay, I have to go now. Sorry for interrupting your sleep.”

“Aye. One day you’ll be at the other end of the line when I’m having a relationship crisis. Hopefully not anytime soon.”

He hung up, and I answered the call. “Hello?”

“Scottie?”

“Yes? Is something wrong? Where’s Griff?”

“He’s going to crash in my guest room for the night. I hope that’s not a problem for you.”

My stomach dropped. If he was across the hall, why couldn’t he come over and sleep next to me?

“Why? Did something happen?”

“He’s just had a little too much to drink, and he explained you didn’t like to see him drunk. It’s no big deal, Scottie. I’ll send him back bright and early tomorrow morning with lots of coffee to sober him up.”
