“Then what is it?”

“I’m still trying to figure my shit out. Not sure what I want to do.”

“Jay—”

“Scottie, I don’t want to talk about this anymore.”

“Just let me say this once, and then I’ll leave it.” I gave him a good look, seeing the boy I’d become best friends with. The tough guy who had had my back when kids picked on me but had never quite learned how to make other friends. Until I’d come along, he’d been alone. “I’m not saying to forgive him or to even let him back into your life, but you can’t tell me that during all these years, you’ve never had questions you wanted to ask him. Because this is your chance to get the answers to those questions. To resolve what’s between you so you can move on and be happy.”

“I am happy.”

“Happier, then. Will you think about it seriously?”

“Fine. Can we stop talking about it already?”

“Sure. Grab some plates for me. Will you?”

“No problem, shortie.”

“I am not short.” He reached up into the cupboards for the plates, and I poked him in the side with the handle of the spatula. “I am perfectly proportioned, thank you very much. Don’t judge my size because you’re a giant just like your—”

I snapped my lips together, heart pounding.

“Just like my what?”

“Nothing.”

He shook his head. “You’re acting weirder than usual.”

“I am not.”

“You are, but whatevs.” The toaster popped. “Let’s eat in here, then play some video games?”

“Okay. That works.”

“And, Scottie?”

“Hmm?” I scooped the eggs onto a plate and glanced up at him.

“Thanks. I don’t always agree with what you say, but thanks for saying it anyway.”

I nodded. This was good. He would come around. Griff just needed to give him some time.

“Don’t mention it. You know I’ve got your back.”

GRIFF

Aknock sounded on my open door. I glanced up from buttoning my shirt. Doug stood in the doorway. He’d returned home at the ass crack of dawn, and I hadn’t seen him since he disappeared into his room for hibernation.

“You going out, man?” he asked.

“Yeah. Got a date.”

“With that skinny little dude?”

I chuckled. “Yeah. Why?”
