I released Scottie’s mouth. A soft sigh escaped him. He wore a silly little dazed look that made me feel ten feet tall. It hit me like a sledgehammer in the gut. Scottie made me feel like I could be a better man and not like my past had to dictate who I was or what I could be.

Scottie was that cool glass of lemonade after a hot-ass day working in the scorching sun.

“Griff.” His voice pulled me out of my thoughts. “Are you okay? You’re regretting this, aren’t you?”

“No, not at all. I’m thinking the opposite. How lucky I am.”

“Oh. Something good happened?”

“You could say that.”

“You’re not going to tell me what?”

“I met you.”

His eyes went wide behind his glasses. “Me?” he squeaked.

I nodded and took his arm. “Come on. We’re taking my bike. I love the feel of you riding behind me.”

He didn’t say a word, just followed me like a ditzy puppy after its master. When we got to my motorcycle, I gave him my jacket to put on.

He stared at my chest, eyes trained on the hardened peaks of my nipples beneath my shirt. The second I’d removed the leather jacket, the wind had attacked them.

“Protective gear,” I said. “I’ll buy you your own leather jacket. This one’s too big on you.”

“I think it looks good.” He twisted around, checking out the fit of the jacket.

“You just like wearing my clothes.”

“I do not.”

“Hmm. They’re the first things you grab after we have sex.”

“Because your stuff’s the only thing lying around, since you always steal my underwear, but if you have a problem with it, then—”

“I don’t. You look great, wearing my oversized shit.”

“I think it’s pronounced shirt.”

He looked so damn cute when he was miffed. I hugged him and nuzzled his neck. “You win. You can wear anything of mine at any time. In fact, when we finish with our date, I’ll let you pick something out of my closet to bring home with you.”

When I stepped back, he fiddled with his glasses and ran his tongue over his braces. “You’re just trying to get me through the door and keep me hostage all night. Well, newsflash. I really am sore.”

“Still?”

He nodded. “We, uhm, went a little overboard.”

“It’s been two days, Scottie. If you’re still that sore, I’d say we went a lot overboard.” I straddled my bike and patted the seat behind me. “Hop on.”

He climbed up behind me. This time, I didn’t have to tell him to hold on tight. He wrapped his arms around my waist and clung to me.

“By the way, where are we going?” he asked.

“You’ll see.”

The night air was refreshing as we drove through the streets, and the wind felt electric on my skin. With every sharp turn or whenever I shifted gears, Scottie tightened his hold. It was tempting to let the engine roar, pushing the bike to its limits, but Scottie’s arms around my waist were a solid reminder I was done with that reckless life.

I slowed down when we approached our destination: a vibrant food park that had live entertainment and a different movie every week. Colorful lights washed over the bustling scene. Strings of twinkling fairy lights were draped between trees, giving it a romantic atmosphere.
