The event planner nods knowingly. “They always are when they’re little like that. Real quick, I need your opinion on a possible last-minute change.”

“Of course,” Renee nods, stepping forward to follow. As she walks away, she calls to me over her shoulder. “Remember to check in with the kids at some point. I love you!”

I smile at her and watch her disappear into the event space, giving her a few seconds before following. Stalking behind the two chatting women as they move through the crowd is second nature. I’ve done it a thousand times at this point, and I’ll do it a thousand more.

She’s the center of my universe. My everything. I will always be nearby to make sure she is safe.

As if she can sense I’m nearby, Renee stops and turns, letting her eyes drift over the crowd. When she sees me off to the side her eyes glide over me as if I’m not even there, keeping to the shadows as I follow her. It’s taken practice for her not to stare, risking alerting someone to my presence, but damn she’s gotten good. The only reason I know she saw me is because the faintest smile plays on her lips. She knows I’m never far from her side.

“Is something the matter?” her event planner asks, snapping her attention back to the matter at hand.

“Not at all. Everything is exactly as it should be.”
