“You’ve done enough, really.” She laughs at my chaotic display, jumping down from the desk to finish inspecting the room.

“Here, I found it,” I say to her back as she examines a picture on the wall. I hold my breath as she turns around, anticipating her reaction.

“Oh my gosh!” Her hand flies to her mouth before she doubles over laughing. A full-body laugh that I know is making her ribs ache. It makes me slightly regret this surprise.

“You got me a pink razr!!” She claps giddily, snatching the cell phone out of my hand. Immediately flipping it open and closed dramatically. “Where did you find this?”

“It’s top secret. You’ll have to power it on, but it should be charged,” I prompt her, waiting for her to do it. I can tell the second she realizes what’s happening. The light of the screen in her eyes shows me she can see the home screen, reading the four words I had typed there.

“Callie, I love you more than life itself.” She looks at me, her tear-filled eyes tracking me to where I’m down in front of her on one knee, holding a velvet ring box with her mother’s engagement ring. “I promise to show you every day, how much I value you and how grateful I am to have you in my life. You’ve made me a better man.” Her head is already shaking, yes, but I continue with my final question anyway. “Will you marry me?”

The End
