“Definitely. I can go home and feed Daisy, clean up a little… Do you want me to bring anything?”

“Nope. Saturday nights are pizza nights at the Lewis house. So just bring yourself.”

I nod toward the shopping bags Ben is carrying for me. “I bought Laila a new book. Is it okay if I bring it over for her?”

Ben kisses me again. “She would love that.”

We grin at each other, all the tension from earlier gone. I could stand here all day, just looking at him.

But I have to get home and Ben needs to pick up Laila, so I reluctantly slide into my car while he stands beside the door, waiting on me. Once the door shuts, I hit the ignition and lower the window so I can give him one more kiss before leaving.

“I’ll miss you,” he says, his eyes a bright green again.

“You’ll see me in a couple of hours.” After a pause, I add with a smile, “I’ll miss you, too.”

Another charged moment passes between us. A crackling electricity sends sizzles of heat through my body.

Then Ben jolts. “Your bags. I almost forgot I still have them. Unlock the doors and I’ll put them in the backseat.”

It wouldn’t have been a problem if he had forgotten, since I’ll see him this evening. But I did get another cute outfit—okay, I got a lot of cute things, I blame Ari for it—so maybe I should wear another one for dinner.

I hit the unlock button and Ben opens the rear door, leaning into the back of the car.

I glance in the rearview mirror, but as soon as I see his body behind me, something happens.

Something strange.

Like one slide shifting to another, the image changes.

It’s not Ben.

Someone else is back there.

Shrouded in shadows, dressed all in black. A ski mask covering their face.

It’s not daytime, but night.

Silver flashes, metal shining. Bile rises when I realize what it is.

It’s a gun.

Pointing at me.

Oh, God.

“Don’t move.”

The voice isn’t right. Not a man or woman. It’s something else. “If you move, I’ll shoot you.”

Icy fear is flooding through me, my muscles paralyzed, lungs frozen.

The gun jabs into my head, painful and terrifying.

What should I do?
