So I don’t need to find the right door at all. I just need to find a window.

Lungs seizing, my heart exploding with adrenaline and fear, I lunge down the hallway and yank at a random door.

Please let this work.

Please.

Chapter 23

BEN

I never knew it was possible to be this scared.

Before now, I thought I knew what fear was.

But this?

I can’t breathe past my terror.

The woman I love more than my own life is in danger. She was drugged. Abducted. She could be hurt. He could have assaulted her. What if she’s—

No. I can’t go there. If I start thinking about that, I’ll fall apart. I have to believe Thea is still alive. That she’s holding on, waiting for me to come for her.

But what does he want with her?

There are no good explanations. Just bad and worse.

God. She must be so scared.

My sweet Thea, suffering at the hands of a monster.

Alec Waters.

During the trip to Chappaqua, I found out all about him.

Spoiled. Only child. Wealthy thanks to millions inherited from his family. Unemployed except for occasionally trading stocks online. Most of his time is spent at home playing video games and making monthly trips to Vegas to hire prostitutes.

He’s been banned from nearly every dating website for harassment. There are several complaints filed with police, women claiming Alec stalked them. But there was never enough proof to bring charges.

After hacking his credit card history, we know he had a top-of-the-line security system installed several months ago.

Coincidence? Unlikely.

And now he has Thea.

At least, we think he does. Alec had Thea two hours ago, when the traffic light camera caught him with her in his car.

Does he still have her? Is she inside his house, facing whatever he’s planned for her?

Or is she somewhere else? Did he—

It feels like a giant hand crushing my heart.

Stop thinking about that.

“Ben, are you sure you’re okay with being in on this?”

I jolt at Leo’s question and jerk my head up from my laptop to look at him. He’s turned in the passenger seat, watching me with a worried expression, concern and sympathy in his gaze.
