“You BITCH!”

From behind me, I hear, “Fuck! It’s Alec, he’s chasing after her.”

My lungs are burning as I run even faster. I have to reach her before he does.

Thea stumbles; not falling, but slowing.

Alec closes in.

It’s like everything else is sped up and I’m stuck in slow motion.

He screams at her again. “You fucking punched me! You’re going to be so fucking sorry!”

I’m close enough to see the terror on her face.

If I call to her now, I could startle her. She could fall. And Alec is closer to Thea than I am.

It’s a car crash about to happen. That frozen moment when everything is predicted, the inevitability clear.

I’m a hundred feet away, close, but not enough.

Thea stumbles again, her ankle buckling a little.

Alec puts on a burst of speed—twenty feet, ten.

Then he leaps at her, tackling her to the ground.

She goes down with a pained cry.

Even as I’m shouting at him to stop, Alec flips Thea over and punches her in the face.

He punched her.

My rage ignites. It’s an inferno. An eruption. A supernova.

Alec clamps his hands to her neck. She’s flailing beneath him.

A red haze fills my vision. I roar at him, “DON’T TOUCH HER!”

He jerks his head up to look at me, shock rippling across his face.

Then I’m on him.

I rip him off Thea and pin him to the ground with a howl of rage. My fist flies; once, twice, three times—he goes limp and I could keep hitting him, but a little voice is whispering to me, saying there’s something more important than vengeance.

Thea!

I need to see her. Check her. How badly did he hurt her?

Rylan moves alongside me. He grits out, “I’ve got this piece of shit. Go to Thea.”

I almost lose it when I see her.

She’s hurt. Her jaw is already swelling from where Alec hit her. Blood trickles from a cut on her lip. There are faint pink marks around her throat.

In the shape of fingers.

From where he tried to choke her.
