Enough is enough.

He’s getting married, and it’s not to me. I got a sweet deal out of it, and I’m going to be okay. I always am—eventually.

Chapter

Twenty

HENDRICK

I’m not sure how long I sit at the computer and watch the nothingness that happens. I need action. I’ve never wanted to be in the middle of anything as much as I want to be in the middle of this shit.

This is fucking personal.

Then I think about my future wife and the fact that these are the people who shipped off her sister. It doesn’t mean that we’ll find her actual sister because that was a long time ago, but at least I would know what happened to her for sure. Maybe that would quiet down Harlow and her searching.

Deciding that I can’t stand it a second longer, I grab my keys and start toward the front door, but when I open the door to the condo, I find my mother and father both standing in front of me. I open my mouth to ask them what the fuck is going on, but instead, they barge inside.

Taking a step backward, I move toward my sofa and sink down on the cushion as my parents do the same, my father choosing the chair instead.

“You’re here like there’s an issue,” I state. “Is everything with the wedding okay?”

My mother shakes her head, her eyes finding mine. “The wedding is perfect. Everything is exactly as it should be.”

“But?” I say.

She shrugs a shoulder, looking down at her lap. “Are you happy?” she asks, lifting her gaze to meet mine.

My attention shifts toward my father. His eyes are wide as he looks at me, holding my gaze with his own. He doesn’t give me anything, not a goddamn thing. I watch him, waiting for a cue, but I get absolutely nothing.

Letting out a sigh, I swing my gaze back to my mother. “Yes, I’m happy. I have my family, and I’ll be marrying my prized bride. Why wouldn’t I be?” I ask.

That must be what they needed to hear me say because the next thing my father does is take an envelope out of his pocket. He hands it to me. Leaning forward, I take it from his hand and open it like a greedy little boy.

When I see the contents, I lift my gaze to meet his, my eyes widening. “Dad?”

“Happy wedding. Your mother couldn’t wait. It closed escrow today.”

I recognize the street name because it’s the same road that both of my brothers live on. I can’t believe they bought me a house. My parents bought me a house. I open my mouth to ask them what the fuck is happening when my father continues.

“You finish this project I have you working on, there’s a manager position in it for you.”

Nodding once, I lift my gaze to meet his. “Thanks,” I whisper.

“Just to say, this house doesn’t come with the marriage. If that doesn’t work out, it’s still yours.”

I almost ask him if he’s expecting it not to work out, but I decide against it. This marriage will happen, and it will be great. I’ll have a sweet little obedient virgin wife, and it will be great.

Wonderful.

Hell, who am I kidding?

Through no fault of Harlow’s, it’s going to be boring as fuck.

My mother orders delivery, and both of my parents stay to eat with me. It’s an odd sensation. I’m not sure they’ve ever ordered and stayed for dinner past the first night I moved in here. I’ve always gone to their place, but I can’t deny it’s kind of nice to have them here with me.

When our evening comes to an end, my father wraps his arm around me in a hug, his lips against my ear. “Have you found anything?” he hisses.

“The case is beginning to crack. Girls for sale.”
