He gives me a why is this a big deal look, but relents. “I need to get going anyway.”

“You don’t have to leave on account of me,” Macy says, greeting him with a hug when he stands up from the table. Gumby follows her inside, staying close to her heel. Though it’s more than obvious that Weston doesn’t have any romantic interest in her, I automatically stiffen watching them embrace. Fuck, since when did I become the jealous type? “I haven’t seen you in ages, Weston. How have you been?”

“Oh, you know. Busy as always.”

“Don’t be modest, Weston. He’s been saving farms from big, hungry corporations left and right.”

“Have you now?”

Weston shrugs, never one to brag. I take advantage of his uncomfortable silence, Macy looking at him expectantly for an answer, and rake my gaze up and down that perfect body of hers. She’s wearing a pink hoodie that says I’m the cat’s meow. I can’t wait to strip her out of it.

“I hear you have a practice in Fort Collins,” Weston says to Macy.

“Oh, it’s not mine,” Macy says, catching my gaze and holding it for a brief moment. Reminding me why she’s really here. I force myself to sit at the table and not act like I want my brother to get the fuck out of here yesterday. “I mean, I’m not a partner or anything. But I do love it there.”

“I heard something about oncology?”

I perk up at this new bit of information that has somehow escaped me during Macy’s entire visit but try to hide it behind a pull of the single beer I’ve been milking for two hours. Damn. It’s warm and tastes like piss. I carry it to the sink and empty it out.

“I applied to the veterinarian oncology program.” Macy’s grin is massive, but there’s something off about it. Her eyes don’t quite sparkle like they normally do when she’s excited. What isn’t she saying? “It’s part of my ten-year plan. I want to give animals with cancer a better chance of longer survival. Something I’ve dreamed of doing since I was a kid and we had to put down our cat, Skittles, because he had liver cancer.” She looks down at Gumby, no doubt suspecting the three-legged Aussie had osteosarcoma. I look forward to the smile of relief I can bring her when I tell her his missing leg was due to a car accident years ago. Thanks to Paps taking him in, he’s been thriving and expected to live a good and full life. “Still waiting to hear if I got in though.”

“How soon will you know?”

I raise an eyebrow at Weston, but he doesn’t pay any attention to me. It’s not like him to be this chatty. He’s usually the “only say what’s absolutely necessary” type.

“Any day now I hope.”

“Well, good luck. I’m sure you’ll do amazing things.”

“It was good to see you, Weston.”

“You too.”

Gumby, deciding his girlfriend is too preoccupied to give him all the nonstop love and affection he wants, trots off into the living room in search of his posse.

I busy myself with grabbing two beers from the fridge, feeling suddenly nervous now that Macy and I are about to be all alone. It’s not that I’m worried about performing. Hell, I’ve been half-hard since she waltzed into the kitchen. The truth nags at me, but I shove it down. Tonight is not the night to get tangled in feelings and scare the woman away. Tonight is the night to rock her fucking world so hard that she’ll end up with an insatiable craving for more.

“Drink?”

Macy looks at the beer with raised eyebrows, then flickers her playful gaze up to mine. “I’m doing that whole never drinking again thing.”

“That’s too bad,” I say, switching them out for bottles of water from the fridge. “I was really hoping to hear your next set list tonight.”

“Not a chance,” she says with an easy laugh.

I offer up a water and our fingers graze as she accepts. A bolt of fucking lightning races up my arm and shoots straight to my dick. “So, you’re pursuing oncology?”

Macy sets the untouched bottle on the counter and crosses her arms over her waist, grabbing the hem of her lightweight hoodie. She pulls it up over her head, revealing all that she isn’t wearing beneath it. Her nipples are hard and pointing right at me, those tits begging for my attention. “Do you want to waste tonight on small talk or would you rather get me the rest of the way naked?”

I grab her hand and lead her to the bedroom. I turn on the light, not surprised to find a gaggle of animals on my bed. “Everybody out!”

Herby lifts his sleepy head, sending a death glare my way. Barney stretches long and slow. Gumby stands on the corner of the bed, his butt wiggling with excitement. I tug at the throw blanket I thankfully had the foresight to cover my bed with earlier after changing the sheets, encouraging them off.

After a few grumbles, the crew of misfits pile out into the living room, no doubt to take over my couch. I close the door behind them and pull back the covers, revealing a set of soft gray sheets. “I promise, they’re clean.”

Macy flips the light switch and the room goes mostly dark.

“Going to deny me the pleasure of viewing every inch of that smoking hot body, sweetheart?”
