She gripped my shirt and said, “I need something else right now.”

Good thing I already ate breakfast and Braz was on board with taking shifts to watch over them at night. I couldn’t linger outside their window because I didn’t have wings, but he did. He was also lightning fast, so I was already on my way when he told me she was starving already this morning.

Maxine pulled me closer and we both crossed the stream, my foot felt the cool water beneath it and nothing more, but I stopped focusing on that sensation the moment her lips touched mine and she said, “I need you inside me.”

The tree might not approve, but we’d find out soon enough. She made quick work of her clothes and I made sure I could just pull down my shorts after that whole park encounter was a bit more troublesome than I anticipated.

“I want the vibrations.”

I had barely gotten us positioned and she was already making demands of me. Demands I could and would meet even if they made things more intense and took a bit longer for me to recover from.

“Thurst.” Her sound of relief upon my entry meant everything to me.

Against the tree, I took her rough, hard, and with a focus on the vibrations that had me breathing like I just left the arena when I placed her back on her feet.

“I’m hungry.”

“Of course, My Love.” I needed to find more isolated and disconnected salt water and soon. Neither of us could chance returning to her fantasy island, but there had to be another way. Another one like it. Something had to go in our favor and soon. She would not need so many months to prepare for the birth of this little one. The desire for food and fornication only meant she had to keep her mate close because the growth was rapid and varied from one birth to the next, but females always took longer to develop than males in my species and I assumed, based on the alpha structure of hers and the awareness she could only have a girl, we were just waiting for it to get smart enough to decide to exit her habitat and enter the world of ours.

Maxine

We left the administration building with permission to settle together in a cottage near the campus. A tub of salt water would be brought there so the little guppy in my womb would enter into a safe environment and while Thurston could not get in with me, he could wear gloves and assist as per the tradition of his species.

Who the hell knew what my species did. I had to admit, the academy seemed more interested in protecting me since I was rare. I somehow doubted the Mayhem name had anything to do with it. If anything, they seemed unsurprised by the revelation that my father was dangerous and came by my tuition in nefarious ways.

It made me wonder if Thurst was right about it being a fortress of some sort.

“Hey.” He looked over at me and asked, “I never told you that.”

“Told me what?” I asked.

Realization struck us both at the same time and we began speaking out loud at the same time which resulted in laughter. Laughter.

I said, and thought, with all of my heart, “I love you.”

“Yes you do.” He kissed my lips and said, “And I love you. We should commit, Max. Bind ourselves. Marriage. Whatever you want to call it. You’re my home now.” He sighed and said, “It may not be traditional, but we’re finding ways, right? We can make new traditions with our family.”

I saw it in his expression as he thought further ahead down the road. He nodded and said, “And we will find a new water source once it is safe to leave the academy lands. Okay?”

“Okay.” I stroked his face and smiled up at him.

Mr. Mayhem

“Pardon me?” I asked as the man in front of me said it once again. I shook my head. “Impossible. Have you found my wife?”

“No. She portaled once she saw you with—”

I held up my hand. “I know what she saw. I know where she is.”

“Where?” the inept detective asked.

“The last place anyone would expect her to ever go.” I had to clear the nonsense he spouted about my daughter before I disintegrated that little prison I built for her when she was being a brat. Couldn’t risk my only child being there.

“Well, if you know everything—”
