“No.”

“New shirt?”

“Nope.”

“You shaved.”

“Yes.”

“Wow. Saving up your words for the family meeting?” She pops her hip out, nudging against mine.

“Funny. Thanks for bringing the food.” I lift the boxes from her hands, easing her load.

Heading toward the kitchen island, she follows behind me. The change in direction effectively cut the interrogation short, and for that, at least, I’m grateful.

I set the pizza boxes down on the granite counter, then head to the bar to fix Poppy and myself a drink.

“What do you want?” I ask, snagging a rocks glass for myself.

“I’ll take wine, if you have any.”

“White?”

“Sure.”

I pour her drink, then mine. I’m going to need more than one drink to get through this night, I think.

“Parker’s on his way, and Rome was stopping home to change.”

“Okay.”

“Think they’ll care if we eat? I’m starving. Worked through lunch because we had a glitch in the computer system, and two guests were booked in the same villa. Total nightmare trying to figure out the rooms.”

I shrug. “I’m sure they won’t care, long as you leave them some food.”

“Cool.”

Poppy takes her wine, and I grab plates from the cabinet, setting them on the island next to the pizza. She opens the box, and the scent of baked dough and fresh garlic hits my nostrils.

“Seaglass Slice has the best pizza, I swear.” Poppy takes a bite, nibbling at a string of cheese dangling from the triangle.

I nod and sip at my drink, the burn of the bourbon a sharp contrast to the icy temp of the liquid.

“They do.”

“Aren’t you going to eat?” She narrows her eyes at me again. Why does Poppy always make me feel like she’s taking notes?

“In a minute. I’m not that hungry.”

“Hey!” The screen door bangs open, and Parker saunters into the kitchen. “Y’all started without me?”

He doesn’t bother with niceties, instead beelining for the pizza.

“Seaglass Slice never disappoints,” Parker mumbles, his mouth already stuffed full of pizza.

“Do you two share a brain or something? Poppy just said the same damn thing not two seconds ago.” I stare at the both of them, marveling at their similarities. Uncanny, really, how they’re so interconnected.

“I have most of the brain, I think. I let Parker have, like, a quarter.”
