“Zaria?” Confusion laced his voice. “What’s going on?”

“I don’t know if you remember, but we have to get out of here now!” I urged.

He tried to move but barely had control of his body. “I don’t think I can shift.”

“Take more of my power.” I forced more at him.

“Goddess, Sol. Nothing like getting water boarded with magic.” He sounded drunk.

“This isn’t funny. We are surrounded, and I need you to shift.” I poured every ounce of what I was into him, disregarding what he’d told me about burning out my magic and making myself sick.

He wasn’t doing it on his own, and I didn’t know how he controlled it, but I squeezed my eyes shut and willed him to shift.

His dragon exploded out, massive and snarling. I jumped on his back, not hesitating as he leapt off the ground, and we soared into the air.

A volley of arrows followed, striking us all over.

Pain seared through my shoulder, and I bit back a cry. Arrow after arrow sliced through Nyx’s wings, and I felt every one. He hissed but made no other sound. The pain drove up my nausea until I thought I couldn’t bear another hit. Why was I feeling his pain?

Was it the shared magic?

I slowed the power I was giving him to a trickle…

And he fell out of the sky.

“Zaria!”

FIFTY

ZARIA

We plummeted toward the ground.

“Nyx!”

“What were you doing?”

“I was giving you my magic.”

“Why did it stop? Are you out?”

“Flying isn’t magic. Why can’t you fly?”

“I don’t know!” I’d never heard his voice so panicked.

I didn’t have time to figure it out.

I forced my power into him as hard as I could.

He kept falling.

I braced for the impact.

It was too late.

I’d failed him.

Falling from this height would surely kill us both.
