“I must, and this lad needs to go with them, too.” Jaxus pointed to Luka, who had remained quiet while Nyx grieved. Jaxus had made up his mind.

“May the Goddess give you speed.” Augustus inclined his head in respect.

“And to you, my friend,” Jaxus returned.

Augustus and Xavi shifted and took off for the Wild Mountains.

Nyx didn’t say anything to Jaxus before he shifted. Jaxus followed suit, and Luka and I mounted.

Nyx shot into the air without a word.

I sobbed into his scales.

SIXTY-FIVE

ZARIA

The journey home was a blur. Nyx had shut down. When we stopped briefly for water, Jaxus and Luka offered me company, but I couldn’t separate myself from Nyx. I didn’t know how Nyx flew. I felt barely alive. Time stopped, or maybe it flowed. It all blended together, and by the time we arrived back at the capital and landed on a platform at the palace, all of me was numb.

We must have been seen by the spotters because we had a party waiting for us, including the Regent.

Kiera sprinted to my side as I dropped off Nyx’s back.

The Regent stormed to Nyx as he shifted. “Where have you been?” he said in a snarl. “You can’t go running off. You’re needed here. We lost another flight, and we have no idea what’s going on with the outpost—”Octavian’s words faltered as Jaxus landed beside us carrying Luka. “Who is this?” he demanded.

Nyx didn’t seem capable of forming the words, so I stepped in, addressing the Regent for him. “There will be time for all your questions,” I told him, proud of myself for my firm and steady tone. “Right now, Nyx needs a healer.”

Octavian scoffed. “Not until I have some answers. I?—”

Nyx cut him off. “They are all dead. They are using Dragon’s Bane to incapacitate them before they kill them and turn them.” His tone was flat.

A gasp rippled through the small group.

Kiera searched my face, questioning.

I nodded.

“Are you okay?” she asked quietly.

“I don’t know, but check Nyx. They’ve created weapons with Dragon’s Bane. We were close when one exploded.” I closed my eyes, but the image of Kol at the center of it was burned into my soul.

Kiera whispered something to another healer, then turned to Nyx, putting a hand over his lungs to listen to him with her magic.

Octavian regained his voice.“Nyx needs to come with me to brief the King.” He informed Kiera since she was now in his way.

"He’s been poisoned with Dragon’s Bane. He needs medical treatment.”

“We don’t have time for that.” He lifted a lip in a sneer.

“While I understand the urgency, he’s no good to anyone dead.”

“He looks fine,” he argued.

“Respectfully, you are not a healer, and I will pull rank if I have to.”

Octavian spluttered. “I am Regent General.”

“I know your position, but you know in our founding charter, the right to emergency medical care comes before even the highest matters of the crown.”
