“I agree, and the boy?” Kiera’s father asked.

Kiera side-eyed me. “He’s not a dragon and shouldn’t be affected…”

“I’m fine,” Luka said. “It doesn’t affect me.”

Kiera’s father looked him over before saying, “Shall we go gather those things?”

“Yes. Zaria, would you prefer to stay in here with Nyx?”

I nodded, and they left, leaving us all in silent shock. I don’t know what came over me, but I climbed into bed with Nyx. He seemed to come back from his thoughts and welcomed me into his arms. I pressed my face into his chest.

“Do you want us to leave?” Jaxus asked. I’d honestly forgotten he was there.

“No,” Nyx said, his voice empty and dry. He glanced at the door. “We need to get our story straight.”

“Straight?” Jaxus asked, sounding alarmed.

“Do we need a story?” I raised my head to look at him, as confused as Jaxus was.

Nyx watched the door beyond which he knew Octavian waited. He couldn’t hear, but Nyx still exercised caution, waving Jaxus closer. “We have a dragon with us that no one knows, who was not brought to the First Kingdom like he was meant to. I think there will be questions, and we can’t risk your home being revealed, so we need to all have the same story so we don’t break the blood oath.”

Jaxus nodded, glancing over his shoulder at the door. “Is it normal to be under such scrutiny while you heal?”

“I am to replace him when I take my place as the general. I can only assume he is anxious about my intentions on that front.”

Jaxus nodded in understanding. “Then let’s decide before he barges in here.”

“He could have been isolated in a remote village like Zaria and I were,” Luka offered.

I nodded. “I agree. Then he’d be ignorant to the fact that all dragons are sent here to train when they are younglings.”

Jaxus made a disgusted face. “As young, they are torn away from their families? Who teaches them?”

“There is a school here,” Nyx replied.

“A school cannot replace family.” Jaxus shook his head.

“I’ve never thought about it because it was my normal, and my family was here, too. For others it’s—” He cut himself off. “I don’t know what it is, but it’s like the wool has been ripped off my eyes, and I’m seeing a lot of things I’ve never seen before.”

I didn’t know what this meant for any of us.

Jaxus clasped his hands behind his back. “Is that our story, then?”

“I think so.” Nyx laid back. “I think we rescued you from your remote village, and here we are.”

“Did Kiera ask?” Nyx asked me.

“I told her the basics. I will fill her in once we aren’t being scrutinized.”

“Okay.”

We fell into silence.

“We have another small inconvenience,” Jaxus said, breaking the silence.

“What?” Nyx’s face pulled and creased like he was going over all our lose ends.

“If it’s me, you can tell them whatever you like. You found me at his village or the outpost,”Luka spoke up. “I’ll go along with whatever.”
