“Look at me.” Her sweet voice was still there, layered beneath the command.

But I couldn’t follow the order. Not yet. If I opened my eyes, she might see the real me, not whatever image she’d had in her head about me all these years. I’d rather her remember that guy—the hero who’d held on to her at the embassy and kept her safe—than know the man next to her now.

“Carter Matteo Dominick, look at me.”

Her use of my middle name—my father’s name—had my attention. Not to mention the sexy librarian-teacher voice she said it with, momentarily pausing the pain and reminding me of what we’d done in this bedroom barely twenty minutes earlier.

“I saw your name written on a document once,” she confessed the second I peered at her. “My middle name’s Laurel, in case you were wondering.” A tiny smile formed on her lips. “Now you know, too.”

I reached up and slipped my free hand to the back of her head, tangling her hair between my fingers as I swallowed back the thickness gathering in my throat. “I already know that. And pretty much everything about you.”

She leaned closer, our mouths nearly brushing as she whispered, “Then you should know you can trust me. I don’t know why she kept things from you, but I won’t. I’ll always be honest with you. Sometimes the truth hurts, but?—”

My mouth dropped over hers, catching the rest of her words with it. Cutting off everything after but. Everything after but was usually bullshit anyway.

I released my hold of her so I could guide her around to sit on my lap. She didn’t hesitate, straddling me easily as she rested her arms over my shoulders. We kissed like we didn’t have a care in the world. As if it was only us up there. No burdens. No fucking problems.

I wasn’t sure how we went from talking about Rebecca’s betrayal to my tongue in her mouth and my cock pressing against her, but I wouldn’t have changed it for anything.

She was taking away the pain and anger inside me with more than just her kiss. It was her honesty. Her trust in me.

But I hadn’t been truthful with her.

I went still. Stopped kissing her. Pulled back to capture her face between my palms. “I have to tell you something.” Am I doing this? Now?

“What is it?” she whispered. Her eyes were so expressive. The way she peered at me I’d swear she had the mysteries of the universe in that head of hers. And she was offering me the key. An invitation to be in heaven with her.

I brought my forehead to hers, closing my eyes while keeping hold of her face. “There was other security footage hidden in Amsterdam, and it was mine. I broke into the lab while it was being constructed and hid it there before your team arrived. That’s how the President and my people knew what happened to you even after the main security cameras were destroyed.”

“I don’t understand. What are you saying? Why would you do that?” She didn’t pull away, sounding more confused than angry.

“You.” The word barreled from my mouth like I was a dying man taking his last breath. My nerves were stretched thin, and I was worried I’d lose her, even while knowing I couldn’t ever truly have her.

“Me?” The little word punctured the air between us, but she’d yet to move. To resist.

“Yes, you.” I finally opened my eyes and leaned back in search of hers. She stared at me, patiently waiting for me to explain. “After I saw you in Pierce’s office in New York that day, I was worried about the sale and what might happen to you. I wanted the ability to watch over you.”

Her mouth rounded in surprise and she blinked a few times, putting it together. “You were checking in on me? That’s . . . well, sweet.”

That wasn’t what I’d anticipated as a reaction, but then again, Diana wasn’t like anyone I’d ever met before. Definitely not like Rebecca. “Not sweet.” I frowned, unsure how to make the word stalker not sound so horrible, but I doubted there was a way to sell this as anything other than what it was. A man obsessed. “I?—”

The knock at the door may have saved me from losing her before I was prepared to. Then again, I doubted anything would truly prepare me for the moment we’d have to part ways.

“Yeah?” I called out.

“Gray let POTUS know there’s a possible traitor among his people,” Griffin shared. “The President wants a word with you. He’s in the Situation Room. We have him on a secure line for a video conference.”

“Be right out.” I returned my attention to the angel on top of me. “I guess this conversation will have to wait.” It wasn’t exactly the time or place for it anyway. Then again, neither was burying my face in her pussy in this exact spot not that long ago, and that hadn’t stopped it from happening. No control. I have none when it comes to you.

She shifted off the bed to stand, and I forced my heavy legs to hold me up as well. “We’ll talk later, okay?”

Worried she wouldn’t want to kiss me after learning the truth about my unhealthy fixation with her, I leaned in and set my mouth on hers.

Her moan and how incredible her lips felt on mine made me lightheaded and hard again. “I should probably not have an erection on the call with POTUS,” I said after groaning from the loss of her mouth.

“Probably not.” She wet her lips, and I hooked my arm behind her back, drawing her against me.

“You’re going to be the death of me,” I rasped before catching her tongue with mine, arching into her so she could feel how turned on I was even with the fate of the fucking world hanging in the balance.
