“There are plenty of drinks at the party.”

I swallowed. “A drink somewhere else.”

“Well then, I’m coming with you.” She sidestepped me and reached my rental SUV before I had a chance to order her to stand down.

I didn’t have the energy to go head-to-head with the stubborn woman. She really was like a pain-in-the-ass sister, but I loved her. The only woman I’d ever love again, but that was because she was family.

Once I was behind the wheel, she buckled in next to me and wasted no time to press me again. “So, what’s going on?”

I started up the Tahoe. “How do you know there’s anything going on?”

She jerked her thumb over her shoulder. “Because you left Dallas at the party.”

She had me there. “I’ll be back for him.”

“Speaking of Dallas, have you found someone new to replace Elizabeth yet? You never told me why you let her go.”

And you don’t need to know why I fired Elizabeth. Oddly enough, she was loosely connected to my present foul mood. “No, I didn’t.”

“Would you please talk to me,” she pleaded once I pulled away from the curb.

“Susan Mackenzie is the new Secretary of State,” I revealed hesitantly.

“The same Susan who was like a godmother to Rebecca and helped me plan the funeral?”

All I could do was nod.

“So, you’re thinking about Rebecca right now?”

I nodded again, even though there was a lot more I was thinking about right now than that. Like a truckload of guilt.

I’d considered seeing a priest again, but I was Stateside, and I didn’t want to go to confession on U.S. soil, even if I was no longer a wanted man. There were a lot of people unhappy about my name being removed as a traitor and enemy of the State, and one of them was now Secretary of State. Her position of power would be a new problem for me, I was sure of it.

Camila reached for me, and on instinct, I pulled away from her touch. “I don’t need you seeing my future.”

“I’m sorry, you’re right.” From the corner of my eye, I noticed her wiggling her fingers. “I wish I could turn this thing off.”

That thing was her visions. What had started as confusing dreams had turned into her being able to sometimes lay a hand on someone and get a glimpse into their future. It was all surreal, and if I hadn’t witnessed her help people because of those “predictions,” I wouldn’t have believed it myself.

“I wish I could have saved her. You know that, right? My abilities weren’t what they are now, and I didn’t know what would happen to her back then,” she said softly.

Her strange words to me in Rebecca’s office the day of the funeral came back to me, finally making sense. They wouldn’t have back then since she’d yet to open up to me about her visions.

“Maybe I need to get away for a while. Go somewhere I don’t know anyone. Chill on a beach. Touch people again without seeing their fate since it usually only happens if I have a connection with them, or they’re tied to a case.”

“You just got a place in D.C. I thought you wanted to make a home here?”

“Yeah, I know. But a vacation first might be nice. Six months or so. Go off-the-grid. No technology.”

That’s a long vacation. But the no-technology part sounded nice.

“But back to you. What else is on your mind? Stop being all broody. Stewing in silence will get you nowhere.”

What can I even tell you? That Wyatt’s daughter walked into my office while I was getting serviced by my dog sitter.

Gwen was younger than Diana, but they were both blonde with light eyes. Extremely smart and daughters of Teamguys. I was pretty sure Gwen’s middle name was also Diana, adding to the damning list of wild coincidences.

Throw in the above with the fact I’d had too much to drink, and I may have been staring at Gwen while she remained stunned in the doorway, but in my head, it was Diana who’d caught me getting my cock deepthroated. Like she was witnessing me cheating on Rebecca.
