Penelope

Two weeks later

My life was changing fast.

I had gone from a normal routine of rising in the morning, going to class, getting lunch with friends, to hanging out on the weekends at Romeo’s to falling in love with my professor, getting pregnant by him, and becoming his fiancée in the matter of a few months’ time.

Most people would think I was crazy, but the truth was when you know, you know. And I knew more than anything that being with Dominic was where I was meant to be.

Most importantly, it was where I wanted to be.

I stared at my closet, my gaze moving over the winter clothes hanging on racks I needed to pack. I was moving in with Dominic for the next two months, but he wanted me to stay long-term. I didn’t have a problem with that, per se, but this was all so new I needed time to conduct a proper move.

I owned this house and I didn’t want to sell it. That meant it would have to go on the market as a rental property, but at the same time, I wanted to keep it for myself. I hadn’t figured out what I would do.

I left the closet and walked to my bedroom window. Outside, a black Range Rover sat in front of my mailbox, another one sat at the end of the street, and a third one was half a mile down the road. I was surrounded with security. Because of my pregnancy, I’d become guarded like the president of the United States—as if I was a matter of national importance.

Dominic said it was for safety measures, but it seemed extensive. However, I understood the ramifications of being the woman on the underboss’s arm—and carrying his heir. It was a lot to take in but I was unafraid as long as Dominic was by my side.

A BMW drove around the Range Rover and pulled into the driveway.

“Shit.” I smiled at the approach of my friends. I knew they were getting ready to drill me to death with questions, and I had to think quickly about what I should tell them. The truth, perhaps? Half of it? None of it?

I didn’t have much time to ponder before they left the car, all three looking chic and fabulous in the latest mall gear as they strolled closer; Emma and Sofia side by side, and Alice behind them on the way to my front door.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

I passed slowly by my bathroom, and wisps of steam trailed from the corners of the door.

I pushed it open slightly. “It’s my friends,” I told Dominic, who was showering.

“I know,” he responded.

My brows rose, and then I frowned. How did he know?

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

I didn’t have much time to ask, but I reminded myself to ask later. Rushing to the door, I swung it open, and their faces lit up like Christmas trees.

“Penelope!” they shouted.

“Hi,” I blushed, and they rushed me with hugs.

Warmth spread over me as I welcomed their embraces, stretching my arms as wide as possible to hug them back. “Awww, I miss you guys, too.”

They tightened their grips, and cool wind flew inside.

“Come on in, please!”

We drew away, and they filtered inside, and I shut the door behind them. When I turned, they hadn’t moved any further and I chuckled.

“Can I get you something to drink?”

“Where have you been?” Alice shouted.

“Yeah!” Emma and Sofia chorused.

I laughed. “It’s a long story.”
