“Magical. I was uncertain whether to invite my friends to our wedding.” I crossed my legs as the chauffeur closed my door and I slipped on a pair of Christian Dior sunglasses.

“Do you want them there?”

“Of course. I mean…” I cleared my throat and inhaled deeply. “I do, but I’m not sure if it’s the right move. They’ve just recently found out about us and I don’t know what they’ll say. Ms. De Luca assured me that they would be happy to celebrate with me and I think she’s right but a part of me is still unsure.”

“Think about it a little more. You’ve got time. But understand if they do attend, they’ll become noticed by our allies—and possibly our enemies.”

My heart nearly stopped when he said that.

“Before you become too worried, we can protect them.”

I sighed, and finger-combed my hair, trying to cope with his words. “Technically, they’ve already got security because of who their parents are.”

“I’m not talking about that type of protection.”

I nodded. “You’re talking about the John Wick type.”

Dark laughter seeped into my ear and I tingled with warmth. “You and your movies.”

“I love them.”

“Is that what you think our life will be like?”

I shrugged, though he couldn’t see. “Give or take. Am I wrong?”

“Have you ever seen a man die before, Penelope?”

A shudder slipped down my skin. “No. It’s only entertaining in the movies.”

The line quieted and I glanced at my phone. “Dominic?”

“I’m taking you away tomorrow. Pack a light bag.”

“Where are we going?”

“Sicily.”

I smiled. “I’ll be ready when you are.”

“We’re taking a red-eye flight. I’ll be at your home in a few hours.”

“I’ll see you soon.”

“I love you.”

My heart flipped. “I love you, too.”

The line dropped and I still couldn’t believe my luck. I’d fallen in love with my professor and he reciprocated my feelings.

I was glued to the window as Dominic’s jet broke through the clouds. A burst of colors covered the island's rugged landscape, blanketing the countryside in a kaleidoscope of hues.

Vibrant reds, purples, yellows, oranges, and green vegetation were spread about, and crystal-clear waters washed on a sandy beach.
