“No.”

He nodded. “What’s the plan?”

“Where is his son?”

Bruno’s eyes turned into slits. “Penelope’s father?”

“Yes.”

“He’s been taken captive on the second floor,” Mano said. “Does he know where Penelope is?”

“I don’t know.”

“Take me to him.”

Thirteen men were lined up on their knees in the dining hall. I glanced at all of them and spotted Penelope’s father.

Strolling to him, I removed my cell phone and answered it on speakerphone when it rang.

“Where is she?”

“She’s in the attic with her bitch mother.”

“I have your son here, Riccardo. Do you plan to run and leave him in the lion's den?”

“He can fend for himself.”

Penelope’s father glared at the phone, enraged at his father’s own words.

“What kind of father leaves his son to die?”

“The kind that understands that it’s every man for himself in this world.”

My capos were already moving to the attic to see if Penelope was there.

“I gave you what you want, Lucas!” he shouted through the phone.

One of my capos returned and nodded. “I am a man of my word,” I said. I disconnected the call and snapped my finger at Penelope’s father. Bruno grabbed his collar and jerked him to his feet.

I eyed him. “Your father has left you for dead. But…I’m going to give you the opportunity of a lifetime. Understand me—–Riccardo cannot live. Either you kill him, or I will. And if you do, I’ll keep it between us. Your daughter will never know it was you who killed her grandfather. I’ll let her believe it was me. You’ve got twenty-four hours.”

I walked away from him and went for Penelope.

Epilogue

Penelope

I relived the moment that his shadow filled the attic’s doorway. My heart lurched, and tears stained my face as I ran to him.

Dominic wrapped me in his arms, and I wept against his chest, sobbing uncontrollably.

I was dehydrated and fatigued from the constant vomiting. Morning sickness had hit me so roughly that I felt on the edge of life at times. My parents knew I was pregnant, and as much as my mom tried to assist me, Riccardo kept her away as much as possible.

He was the devil, and I couldn’t understand how someone like him could have the same blood running through his veins as me and my father.

“I’m never leaving your side again,” Dominic murmured in my ear.
