I lift a shoulder and take another drink.

“What wrong are you admitting to?”

“Shouldn’t have punched you. Should have asked you if you and Whit had a thing going instead of stewing about it.”

He doesn’t say anything, probably more afraid of Whit’s left hook than my jab.

“She told me.”

“Oh, yeah?” Marks asks. “She tell you anything else?”

“Couple of things.”

“Like?” Danny asks.

“Cut the shit. I know Nelly lied and told her that?—”

“It’s about fucking time.” Danny exhales like he’s been holding his breath for years. Gonna guess he has been in a way. Then, he starts talking, and hell yes, I let him. “Fucked up she lied to Whit about one of her best friends. It’s messed up she didn’t ask you directly, but I understand not wanting to put more on your plate at the time. I told her there was no way you dipped it in Nelly.” He holds up his hand defensively. “I didn’t tell her why I knew that for certain. Didn’t expose your secret.”

“Not nailing every female offering it up in Walton wasn’t a secret. You two might be okay with playing pass the ass, but I’m not.”

“That was only in high school,” Marks defends.

“And it was only because the ladies of Walton deserved a good time, and it just so happened that Marks and I could provide them with that.”

“Such Southern gentlemen.” I chuckle.

“Public service was always my calling,” Marks jokes.

“Never did tell us who flipped your skirt first. Was it groupies in the minors, or did you keep polishing your cherry until you found someone special?”

“Quit busting his ass. Not a damn thing wrong with only fucking tens.” Marks crushes his can and grabs us both another.

“I’m not asking for a roster, just your first. Spill it,” Danny insists.

“All you’re getting from me is, I didn’t leave here a boy.” I pop the tab on my can and take a drink.

“We promised we’d all tell each other when we busted a nut inside an actual chick and not a hand or mouth or our own fist. So?—”

Marks cuts him off. “Danny, you should’ve been born blond.”

“My hair’s brown,” he says, and I can’t help but laugh. “What, man? A promise is a promise.”

“Clearly not,” Marks mumbles. Clearly, he’s figured it out.

I say not a word, not one.

“Hold the fuck on,” Danny says, apparently having a light-bulb moment. “Are you fucking kidding me right now?”

“He’s not saying a single word.” Marks snickers.

“You’re the one who was all, Whit is off-limits.”

Marks chuckles. “Guessing she still is.”

At the same time, I say, “She still is.”

Silence ensues until Danny has another epiphany. “That’s why Whit was so upset about Nelly, and you were so pissed, thinking I’d tapped that?—”
