“I can’t expect you to sit here in a mess of my doing.”

“You didn’t create this issue. I’m not leaving, Whit.” I hit the keys, rewinding the footage further. “We’re figuring this out, but I gotta tell you, this date is going to be the last one your ex gets to be a part of.”

“The board asked Whitley to step down?” Danny asks. I simply nod, not trusting myself to speak because nothing good will come out of my mouth if I do. “And York?”

Marks answers that one. “York’s not being portrayed as a scorned ex, nor would they say that’s the reason behind them asking Whit to step down. York will be leaving once she figures out why the hell Kal’s been stopping by once a week since Alice was the last full-time hire, which didn’t happen until after the Sewards started donating to the shelter.”

“Glad shit flows downstream. We wouldn’t want that local shit in Seward-ville to flow upstream and taint the waters of Walton,” Danny grumbles and looks at me. “So, how’s Whit?”

“Not good, I’m sure.” I answer.

“How do you not know?” he all but accuses, which pisses me off and pleases me at the same time.

“Because she’s working a ten-hour shifts.”

“And you’re sure Chloe’s staying with them?” Danny asks … again.

“Yes,” both Marks and I answer… again.

“She going to Vegas with the girls still?” he asks.

“York seems to think so,” Marks answers. “You hear anything?”

I give him a thumbs-up, and he chuckles, knowing that’s all I’ve been getting from Whit in reply to my good morning and good night messages. “Shit’s not funny.”

“It’s Whit.”

“Yeah, well, it didn’t used to be.” Before Nelly told her little lie, one in which I can’t hate her for, not at all.

“You giving up already?” Marks ask

I just look at him.

“You get in touch with Kevin Seward?” Marks asks.

I shake my head as I look at the phone to check the time. It’s nine. Whit should be driving by soon on her way home. “Hasn’t been a good time to talk to Whit about what she wants me to do, and I’m not going to do a damn thing until I know it’s in her best interest.”

“You stopped at the school today?” Danny asks.

I nod. “Pastor B reminded me on Sunday that I’d promised some of the youth of the congregation. I tagged along when he picked up Nora today, and the three of us went over.”

“Is Nora calling you uncle yet, like she does with us?” Danny taunts.

“I know you think it’s cute that we’re on different levels with Nora, and you’re not wrong.” I hold a hand about chest high. “You’re here.” I lift it to my nose. “And I’m about here.”

“Such bullshit,” Danny groans.

“What’s bullshit is just about everything that comes out of your mouth, Danny Aiken.” This comes from behind us, and we all swing around as Chloe walks down the street.

Danny hops over the porch railing and damn near falls. “What the hell are you doing out at this time of night, all alone?”

“I’m not under house arrest, you damn fool. I’m a guest.”

“And you have an ex who?—”
