“I don’t think it would be smart for me to go up against them.”

“They have nothing on you. They’ve done all they can do. I don’t give a shit if they take me to court for a busted window. I’ll win.”

Without warning, I feel wet on my face, and he quickly swipes away the falling tears.

“I promise, I’ll make sure you and Nora—who told me she loved me the other day, Whit, and you can get pissed, but I said it back because I do. I love her, will make sure he’s safe, and she’s?—”

Unable to let him continue, I cut him off. “She’s his. She’s Kal’s.”

He looks at me like I slapped him, and my heart starts to crumble as anger etches his face.

“So, we’re going backward now, and I have to play the only card I have and remind you, that’s not what the birth certificate says.”

I take his face in my hands to stop him from turning away. “She’s Kal’s biological daughter.”

He shakes his head, anger leaving and shock and sadness taking its place as it sinks in.

I force myself to continue. “When I got my phone back, dozens, maybe hundreds, of messages popped up with him threatening to sue for custody of ‘that kid.’ He stated he’d get the right judge and make sure I never saw her again. When I told York about it, she asked if I thought Nora was his.” I sit back and wipe my tears away. “I thought she was crazy and told her so. She said she hoped she was wrong, but then told me she had some things of his from that night at your place and wanted to do a DNA test to prove her theory was wrong.”

“Jesus, Whit,” he sighs.

“So, I either play nice or I chance?—”

He cuts me off. “Or you fight. We fight.”

“Do you think that’s smart?”

“If there’s anything worth fighting for, it’s your little girl. Yours, not his.” He stands and starts to pace then turns and hits himself in the chest. “Fuck, Whit, she’s mine too.”

My lip begins to quiver.

“We’re going to fight for her. There is no way that bastard is getting a moment with her.”

“I’m all about fighting for her, but if I lose?—”

“That’s not gonna happen.”

“You can’t be sure?—”

“Like hell I can’t. Kal is four years older than us. Nelly was your age, right?”

I nod.

“So, he fucked an eighteen-year-old girl and got her pregnant, wanted nothing to do with her. Even after he knew Nora was Nelly’s, he said nothing? I don’t believe for a second that either he or his father wants that to be public knowledge.”

“I can’t lose her,” I repeat.

“Neither can I!” he roars, which startles me. He sits beside me and takes my hand. “Fuck, Whit, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. I was … I am just as angry, but now, I’m more afraid than?—”

“I need to work out a plan.”

“You need to focus on this weekend.”

“Right now, I don’t give a shit about this game.” He seethes.

“I need you to be the stable one because they’re already painting me to be a crazy ex.” I inhale a deep breath. “And if they manage to do that and some of his threats, including the one to get her taken away from me, come true, your name is on her real birth certificate. The one I gave him that I’d removed your name from when I first went to get her name changed, it’s been replaced.”
