Me:

Good night, John Paul.

I hear a laugh as he walks in the bedroom, two bottles of water in one hand and he gives me a thumbs up. I lie back and cover my face giggling.

Sunday

Ididn’t sleep for shit last night, but Whit did. She slept so hard that she was making a noise that somewhat resembled snoring, but in a way that was almost silent. Almost. It was adorable.

We got up, kissed, showered quickly again, and were in the lobby, meeting up with the others by three thirty in the morning in order to make it to church on time.

When we get to the airport in Texas, we men rode in Danny’s truck and the women in York’s, but before we parted ways, I stopped her.

Looking up at me, she gives me the what’s wrong kind of look.

“I’m going to need to kiss you right here and right now to make sure I can do it in front of the congregation without … well, you know.” I wink.

Smiling, she shakes her head, but she doesn’t say no. She fists the collar of my shirt, yanks me down, and kisses me—hard.

When we break apart, she asks, “You good?”

“I’d tell you to find out for yourself, but that would be counterproductive.” I lean in and give her a quick kiss. “See you at church, Whitley Mae Belington.”

As soon as we get in the truck, Danny asks, “How was last night?”

“Good,” I answer, not about to share any more. “How was it for you all?”

“Danny snores,” Marks answers dryly.

“I do not. You snore,” Danny retorts, throwing his truck in drive and pulling out as the girls drive by.

“You know who might snore?” Marks asks.

“I’ll bite. Who?”

“Kris Krone, brother to Alice, who works at the women’s center,” Danny states.

I look from Danny to Marks. “You care to translate from Danny to a language I understa?—”

“Oh, whatever, man,” Danny huffs.

“Kris was the driver the other night when you took out the back window of Kal’s car. He was also Kal’s college roommate freshman and sophomore year. He dropped out his junior year, but still lived in the house Kal and his frat bros rented off campus. Many of the D-bags still run in the same circle, and in the center of that is Kris. We’re assuming Kris got into dealing, that he’s still dealing. Alice, the sister, is the one who hands something off to Kal once a week.”

“Any solid proof?” I ask.

“Nothing solid at all, but she rents a very nice apartment, and there’s no way in hell she can afford it on what she makes.”

“I’ll make sure to work that into the meet with Seward.”

“You know what you’re after?”

“Yeah, for him to put a short leash on his son. I want to make sure he never gets close enough to my wife or daughter to even make out their form.” I scrub a hand over my face.

“And there we have it. Shit got real last night.” Danny chuckles.

“Let’s leave last night alone and talk about what’s coming up.”
