Chloe:

Spud is here. Danny went out. He needs help.

“Fuck!” Marks and I say at the same time.

“Gentlemen, do not?—”

Whit comes running down the hall. “Laurie, stay with Alice. Do not let anyone in there, except you and Doc.” She looks at me. “It’s Spud. Spud’s the shooter, and he’s?—”

“Let’s go.”

Marks, Whit, and I run out through the automatic doors.

As we pass by Burk, he yells, “Where are you going?”

“Ask him, you worthless sorry excuse for a cop!” Whit screams.

“This way.” I grab her hand, and we run to the vehicle.

Sliding in, she pants, “Alice—Alice said it was Spud. They park in the back parking lot. Spud gives Kris drugs; he gives Spud money. Spud wouldn’t give him the coke unless Alice gave him Chloe’s new address. Kris called her out to his vehicle, and she tried to explain she didn’t have Chloe’s information. Spud pulled a gun, Kris, he told Spud he knew where she was and he shot him anyway. He shot him, and Alice ran. He?—”

“Whit”—I throw my arm in front of her as I take a corner, going a good sixty miles per hour over the speed limit—“they’re going to be okay.”

“She said that it’s Kal’s operation, and”—she sobs into her hands—“she said Nelly knew. That Nelly used to do runs to make money when she was here, visiting. Alice thinks that he was trying to get rid of Kris, like he did Nelly.”

As far-fetched as this seems, it would connect a whole lot of dots.

“Whit—”

“Nora was in the car accident that killed Nelly. If he could do that, he’s?—”

“We’re going to take this one step at a time, but I can promise you, if that man comes near her, I’ll end his life.”

“You can’t say that. You can’t be?—”

“I’m one year in the pros, was prepared to do ten before I came back and bent down on one knee, told you how much I loved you, begged you to marry me. I’d make it look like self-defense and be out before?—”

“Stop, just stop.” She bats away her tears.

I throw a hand out again as I take another corner. This time the speedometer is buried.

At the stop on the corner by our house, the yard where we play ball is lit up with the motion lights I had installed, and headlights come from Spud’s jacked-up S-10. I follow Marks as he drives across the field toward a man swinging a bat—Spud. There are two people on the ground. Danny throws himself in front of Chloe, taking the swing to the arm.

“No, no, no!” Whit screams and tries to open the damn door.

I grab her arm and throw the vehicle in park. “Go check on Nora!”

“Oh my God, oh my?—”

I run as fast as I can to get to him before he swings again. Marks is right by my side, and we tackle him from behind.

“Talk to me, Chloe! Danny, talk to me!” Marks yells.

“If this doesn’t get me laid, I’m giving—” Danny’s words stop.

“Wake up, Aiken!” Chloe sobs.

“You whore!” Spud screams as Marks wrenches his arms back and gets him in cuffs. “You filthy fucking whore.”
