“Whit and I will do whatever we can, but, yeah, I’m gonna need a period pass if it’s during training or regular season.”

“We’re going to be building this case brick by brick so they can’t huff and puff and blow our case down. It’s gonna take some time to do that and some time to get it on a docket and in front of a judge that isn’t connected with Kalvin or his father.” Marks winks. “He’s going away.”

Holding Whit’s hand, I pull out of the hospital parking garage and head toward Walton. Dany’s parents and Marks are staying with Danny and Chloe for a night so that Whit and I can go see our girl and hopefully be packing bags and finding a house to rent.

“Are you going to tell me what happened?”

“Yeah, Whit, of course. I think he knows everything but turns a blind eye. In regard to Nora, I’m sure he has suspicions, but I don’t think he has any intention of trying to get any sort of visitation.”

I continue by telling her verbatim what he said, and after that, she doesn’t look any more or any less stressed.

“I’d like to discuss Nora, your grandparents, Danny and?—”

“My grandparents will never leave.” She turns and looks out the window. “Texas is their home, their work and life.”

I pull her hand up and run my fingers across her knuckles.

“They think we should go.”

“And what do you think?”

She turns and looks at me. “I’ve only ever been to Arizona, and I’m scared. But it’s best for Nora.”

“I don’t just want you two in Florida. I want you in New York, and if I get traded, I want you there with me too.” I swear my eyes are burning.

“And if things go bad, you’re still open to Japan?” Tears fill her eyes.

“Whit, I’d take us to the moon.”

She leans over and kisses my cheek. “I love you, John Paul.”

“I love you.”

“When should we leave?”

“With all the shit that’s going on, I say the sooner, the better. I can book flights?—”

“Danny can’t fly after abdominal surgery for at least a week.”

I chuckle. “I guess we rent something and drive then.”

Smiling and, dare I say, a little excited, she pulls out her phone. “Clover Park, right?”

“Yeah, it’s in Port St. Lucie.”

“Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia—oops, nope, that’s Florida. Four new states.”

“If Georgia’s just an oops away, we can hit that too if you want.”

She shakes her head. “You’ve been to all these places.”

“Not with you I haven’t and not with Nora.”

She smiles big and real. “She’s going to be so excited, like off-the-hook excited.”

“Yeah, she is.” I laugh. “Admit it, Whit, so are we.”

“And Danny and Chloe?” She covers her face. “They’re gonna be so annoyed with us.”
