I feel a surge of adrenaline. I need to just do the things my grandfather won’t listen to me talk about. She’s right. I don’t need the title of king to do important things.

And do I want to marry this woman? Fuck yes.

“So, you’re proposing to me then? Is that right, Abigail?” I finally manage, my voice rough.

She gives me a little grin, her hand still on my arm. “I guess I am.”

I reach up and cup her face even as I shake my head. “Of course, you got there on your own.”

There’s a little wrinkle between her brows. “What do you mean?”

“It means that I was going to propose to you again. After you saw how the farm came together. I was going to do whatever it took to show you that you should be Cara’s princess, but you, my gorgeous genius, got there on your own.”

Her eyes widen on the word ‘princess’ and I grin. She proposed to me, but me using the word ‘princess’ surprises her?

“You…were?” she asks.

“I was.” I meet her gaze directly.

“And that means I’ll be the pri…” She presses her lips together and swallows. Then she swallows again.

“The princess thing is just now sinking in?” I ask, reading her.

She nods. “That’s crazy, I know. I was thinking about you being the king and I’d told myself I won’t be the queen…” She takes a breath. “But you calling me…that…suddenly made me realize that I will be…that. At least for a little while. Won’t I?”

I press my thumb into the tip of her chin. “You were thinking about me. About helping me. And about making the farms happen.” I lean in, putting my nose against hers. “And maybe about how you didn’t want me to marry anyone else.”

She nods. “Yeah,” she admits quietly. “You shouldn’t have to get married if you don’t want to. This way it’s only temporary.”

I don’t want it to be temporary. But I do love that she doesn’t want me to marry anyone else.

“But you can’t even say the word princess out loud?”

She shakes her head.

“Abigail, you’re going to have to say the word.”

She wets her lips. “I don’t know.”

“Yes.” I nod. “You’re going to have to.”

“Is this a bad idea?” she asks softly.

“This is the best fucking idea either of us has ever had,” I tell her. “And you’re a genius, so that’s saying something.”

“I’m probably going to be bad at it.”

God, I’m seriously in love with this woman. “No, you’re not,” I tell her firmly. “And when it comes to speeches and stuff…I’ve got you. Just like at Ami’s wedding. Just like today.”

“Okay,” she finally says. Though she doesn’t sound fully convinced.

“Okay,” I agree with a nod.

“Okay?” Jonah asks from the front seat.

I meet his eyes and nod. “Yes. Okay. This is great. Abigail is right about all of it.”

He rolls his eyes.
