“What are you doing?”

“Shh,” he said. “It’s for the best.”

Her vision blurred and her head swam. Before she lost consciousness, she had the strangest thought. John had stuck a needle in her and he was putting her in the trunk of his car.

CHAPTER 26

Zachary

Waking up in bed with Marigold put me in an instant good mood.

She’d rolled away from me in the night, so I moved closer and drew her against me. Her body was warm, her skin soft. And how did this woman smell so good? Closing my eyes, I breathed her in.

I was such a goner.

She made a little noise in her throat as she nestled into me. I groaned as her ass pressed into my groin.

“Morning,” I murmured into her ear and kissed her shoulder.

“You really are here. I was afraid I’d dreamed it.”

I kissed her shoulder again. “I’m here.”

She let out a long exhale. I held her for a while, enjoying the feel of her body molding to mine. I’d wanted this for so long, even before I’d finally admitted it to myself.

I couldn’t screw this up.

After a while, we both decided we needed to take care of biological necessities. It was early, so instead of getting up for the day, we crawled back into bed. I hauled her against me, more aggressively this time, and she giggled.

“Why didn’t I know you could be so sweet?” she asked.

“I don’t know about sweet.” I pressed my groin against her. “I’m just trying to feel your ass.”

She laughed again. “Maybe you’re unintentionally sweet.”

“Maybe I just really like you.”

“Did all this really start when you got shocked in my salon?”

“No.” I kissed her shoulder. “I’ve had a thing for you for a long time, I just tried to ignore it.”

“Why?”

I hesitated. This was tough to admit. “I didn’t think I deserved you.”

She rolled over so we were facing each other and placed her hand alongside my face. “I’m sorry you felt that way.”

“I’m just glad I got my head out of my ass before it was too late. All things considered, I cut this one pretty close.”

She smiled. “Can I tell you a secret?”

“Yeah.”

“I’ve had a crush on you since I was a teenager.”

I both loved and hated hearing that. I loved it because I wanted her to want me as much as I wanted her. But I hated it because I’d wasted so much time.

The perfect woman had been right in front of me for so long. And I’d been too much of an idiot to do the right thing.
