She lifted up to look at me, a playful smile on her lips. “Really?”

“Absolutely.” I put my hand around the back of her neck and brought her mouth to mine for a kiss. “Marigold, I’ve never felt this way about anyone. I’ve never wanted someone like I want you. And I don’t mean just your body. I mean all of you.”

“I wanted you to want me for so long. I thought I was so stupid for wanting it. But I did. And now that we’re… I don’t even know what to think.”

“Now that we’re what?” The corner of my mouth lifted.

“Together?”

“Mm, good girl. I like when you admit you’re mine.”

“I’m yours, Zachary. I think I always have been.”

I brought her in for another kiss then rolled her over so I could kiss her more. I had a lot of lost time to make up for.

She ran her fingers through my hair, kissing me eagerly.

“You better be careful,” I said. “Or I’m not going to be able to stop. And you probably have to get to work.”

Her lips turned up in a wicked smile. “The salon doesn’t open until noon today.”

Groaning, I climbed between her legs again. That was exactly what I wanted to hear.

Eventually, we peeled ourselves out of bed. Reluctantly. I was sated and mellow, but I could have spent all day just kissing her, feeling her soft skin against mine. Unfortunately, the real world didn’t stop moving just because the woman of my dreams was finally mine.

We had a problem to deal with. A big one.

I called Garrett.

“Hey, man,” he answered. “Sorry, no news yet.”

“What the hell happened? He just skipped town?”

“Apparently. He didn’t check out of his hotel and his car is in the lot, but he’s not there. No record of him leaving via the airport, and no sign of him at his construction site, either.”

“Damn it.” I gazed out the front window as a car drove by. “I don’t like that he’s still out there.”

“I don’t either. We’ve alerted the Seattle PD and the state patrol, but I doubt they’ll be much help. It’s not their fault, they’re just maxed out. They have bigger problems than a guy who slapped his girlfriend.”

“She’s not his girlfriend.”

“Fine, a guy who slapped a girl he was dating. Look, don’t stress about it. He’s building a multi-million-dollar mansion. He’s not going to stay away for long. Besides, once his pride stops hurting, he’ll probably let it go.”

“I don’t know about that. It was a heat of the moment thing, I get it. She rejected him and he got pissed. Lost his temper. But I have a bad feeling about that guy. I think he’s dangerous.”

“Just keep an eye on her when you can.”

“She won’t be out of my sight until that piece of shit is locked up.”

“How does she feel about that?”

I grinned. “I’ll make it up to her.”

“All right, I gotta go.”

“Call me if you find anything.”

“I will as long as it doesn’t impede the investigation.”
