“I know!” Happy tears stung my eyes and I dabbed them away. “I don’t want to get ahead of myself, either. I’m just really happy right now.”

“Let’s just breathe in the moment,” Annika said.

We took a deep breath together and the blissful feelings that bubbled up almost made me laugh.

“So what is Zachary doing while you’re here?” Annika asked.

“Moving his stuff. He brought over a few things the other day, but he’s getting the rest. Or at least the rest of what he’s bringing for now.”

“So good,” Annika said. “I love happy news.”

“Thanks,” I said. “But enough about me. Audrey and I need to show you these bridesmaid dresses and I want to hear about the kids.”

We spent some time chatting about Annika’s kids. She always had cute stories to share. Her oldest son, Thomas, had recently been able to go on a ride-along with the fire department and hadn’t stopped talking about it since. Her twin daughters were currently obsessed with mermaids, and her youngest, Will, was keeping her on her toes as usual.

Then we looked at the dresses and gushed about how beautiful the wedding was going to be. I could practically feel Audrey’s excitement. It made my heart so happy.

Eventually Annika had to get home to her kids. Audrey and I both hugged her goodbye.

“Is Zachary picking you up or did you bring your car?” Audrey asked. “I feel like I shouldn’t leave until someone else is here to watch over you.”

“I appreciate it, but I’ll be fine.” My phone buzzed with a call, so I gestured for Audrey to give me a second while I checked to see who it was. “I should take this. It’s my mom.”

“No problem.”

“Hi, Mom. What’s up?”

“Hi, flower. Do you have time to stop by?”

“Actually, yes. I’m just saying goodbye to Audrey, so I can swing by on my way home.”

“Perfect. See you then.”

I ended the call. “I guess I’m stopping by my parents’ place.”

“Have fun,” Audrey said. “It was good to hang out and I’m so thrilled for you.”

“Thank you.”

We hugged goodbye and I went to my car. I didn’t think I needed to worry about Preston—the cops were looking for him and they’d take him in as soon as he showed up in town—but I still glanced around, wary of my surroundings, just in case.

I got in the car and called Zachary to let him know where I was going.

“Hi, gorgeous,” he answered. “How was your girl time?”

“It was wonderful. I love them so much. I’m just calling to let you know I’m stopping by my parents’ house.”

“Sure, yeah. Are you coming home after that?”

“I was planning on it, yes.”

“Good. I miss you. I can’t wait to kiss you all over.”

That sent a rush of tingles down my spine. “I can’t wait either. How is everything going?”

“Not bad. Luke was around, so he’s been helping. We’re just bringing over the stuff I need, so it’s not much.”

“Sounds good. I don’t think I’ll be there too long, so I’ll see you in a little bit.”
