“Yeah, I looked.”

The guest room had a queen bed with a lavender duvet and one of my mom’s paintings of a meadow filled with wildflowers on the wall. I went to the closet, expecting it to have a few things that were spread out, making it look fuller than it was.

I was wrong.

Oops.

I remembered storing my bridesmaid dresses from Isabelle and Annika’s weddings there. And it wouldn’t have surprised me to find a few coats. I kind of had a thing for coats. But I didn’t expect to find it stuffed full of clothes.

The third bedroom was my little library, with bookshelves and a big, comfy chair. Surely that closet was almost empty.

Nope. Full.

I went out to the living room feeling a bit sheepish. Zachary just grinned at me from his spot on the couch.

“You were right,” I said. “I have way too much stuff.”

“I didn’t say you had too much stuff. Just that your closets are full.”

I laughed. “Thank you for not judging, but I do have too much stuff. I should go through it all and donate what I don’t need. I guess I’ve lived alone for so long, I didn’t even think about it.”

He stood and walked over to me, then brushed my hair back from my face.

I loved it when he did that.

“I can just live out of bags for a while. Wouldn’t be the first time.”

“No, I don’t want you to leave your stuff in garbage bags. I can make room. It’s just going to take a little more work than I thought.”

“Need help?”

“Please.”

He leaned in and kissed my forehead.

I loved it when he did that, too.

Since the guest room wasn’t being used, I decided the easiest thing would be to empty out that closet as best as I could. Then we could move some of my things from the master bedroom into that closet to make room for Zachary’s stuff. We’d pile the excess on the guest bed and I could go through it later.

Or maybe just take it all to be donated so I didn’t overthink it.

“How was coffee with my sister and soon-to-be-sister?” Zachary asked as we got started emptying the guest closet.

“It was lovely. There’s been so much going on, it was great to catch up. They were excited to hear that things between us have, well, changed.”

He grinned. “Of course they were.”

I almost blurted out that we’d squealed over the possibility of being sisters someday. Thankfully, I stopped myself. The last thing I needed was to freak Zachary out by implying we might get married.

It was too soon to even think about that. Wasn’t it?

I filled him in on some of the details of Audrey and Josiah’s wedding. I didn’t know how interesting that was to a guy, but he didn’t seem to mind.

“And you stopped by your parents’ place?” he asked.

“I did.” I let out a long sigh.

“Uh-oh. Your voice did that thing you do when you’re sad.”
